A part of the deployment were migration scripts, which were a part of the first phase of the module tiercide (see http://community.eveonline.com/news/dev-blogs/rebalancing-eve-one-module-at-a-time/) and our estimates for the runtime on TQ were off. We always aim to improve so we do an internal post-deployment analysis that feeds into future migrations of similar nature.

Just curious but does legacy code often cause issues with making updates and game changes (if it does at all) ?

Would be nice one day to see a dev blog about the process of updating code from years ago.

Not actually a bad idea. There are a lot of technical people playing eve so there might be a some interest in a blog like that.

And add graphs for everyone else!!

They will not show any legacy code because they don't want to scare us away.

The elephant in the room is here and we know how it is to not have an option to logout to character screen. Legacy code is capable of that and even more. You don't want to see it.

Remind me cause its been a while but one used to be able to log out by pressing escape just a few years ago?

According to people,
it never was possible to log out to a point where one can easily switch char.

It always had to be a full logout for legacy reasons.

Now imagine POS code.... lol

Turns out that a significant number of my IT classmates dont know what it means or why its important.
Of course this is predicated on there actually being a manual and not just the spaghetti code some one made for job security.

ive been playing since 05, not once has there been a switch character button while other older games do. according to a CSM minute i once read it was asked about the change character button which was replied to "it would take a team of programmers 6 months for a 15 second advantage.

another note about the code is the code is very old and complex and it has been said by CCP that all of the programmers that knew the old code has since left the company, none of the current or new programmers that was there with the guys doing the old code bothered to learn it. So you have a team of programmers that know new code, dont understand old code much less can do it and so they look at the old code to determine what part of the code is what they want to change and insert snips of new code into the old code, needless to say this also causes further complicates the code and the ability of it working as planned.

Ah EVE
Where when the players criticize the devs, its highly probable the player has equal or better skills in the subject area.
And the devs enjoy having such an educated player base.

If I was smart, I would have started the updating process right after DT when I gt home, before going to sleep. The launcher has been going through the download process for about 5 hours now.

My internet ins't slow. I still stream Twitch just fine, I still load Youtube videos fine. But even with nothing else using up internet bandwidth, the download is still crawling along at a pace that would put a snail to shame.
