Inject Some Life Back Into This Game!

Moved from a previous sub-forum. Was getting no attention there at all...

It seems that with the push for more frequent updates, the sense of a virtual world is slowly eroding.

There was once a time when EVE's lore was continiously expanded through fortnightly chronicles published on the website, chronicles were published with beautiful artwork through EON Magazine and we'd routinely read live event news (sometimes with no actual event in-game) through the community news. Meanwhile each snippet of Walking in Stations (especially the article published in the magazine more than 5 years ago) brought players just that little bit closer to really involving themselves in this fictional setting.

All of this is gone. We no longer even receive cinematic/lore trailers with each patch.

There are so many lore sections that are out of date in-game. Aside from EVE: Source (which was brilliant) it's apparent there has been a huge shift towards 'all gameplay' and 'no immersion'.

So aside from my concern, what is in the works to help reinvigorate this game's world? What is in the works to entice players to really explore New Eden beyond the appealing gameplay itself?

Looking at the new naming schedule for modules, I fear for the worst honestly.

Note, I like the idea behind the module tiericide, some cleanup was needed after all these years; as some module sections got very messy. I just don't agree with the new bland naming schedule.

On the new schedule, I plan to wait & see till CCP gets more used to it themselves, albeit the lack of ingame news articles worries me. Last one published was about the Mordu's angels handing out medals.

So in the end, I share your concerns about a future of gameplay at the cost of lore/immersion.

To be fair, a six week turnaround makes this impossible with even the largest of cinematics teams. (Yes, even someone like Blizzard.)

True enough. But we've gone from several short clips a year to none at the current pace. The most recent one was EVE FanFest (where we do generally receive one) and EVE Rubicon (which is nearly a year ago).

EVE lets us create our own stories though, which is something other games with generic storylines and don't let you do.

The less CCP develop the lore, the less it will feel like we as capsuleers are 'breaking' the story.

I agree, though, that I like myself a nice chronicle or lore tidbit to read now and then.

Also a good point. And the recent comic was a great way to convey some of those stories and show that players don't just affect EVE through the metagame, we affect the world and the lore itself as well.

But it just seems like the backdrop we play with has vanished entirely in some cases. :/

I've been tempted to post something of the same nature. I know CCP is going through changes and the new update cycle would make large additions hard, but I feel like we should be seeing something. I feel like they are happy with what is laid out and just add as necessary and that's a sad feeling.

The background to EVE is fantastic, and even if we didn't get chronicles often it would be nice to see more news updates from the game world that doesn't involve us capsuleers. I actually expected the industrial changes to come with some game lore updates, but I was just left to assume that overnight CONCORD or someone decided to change how we pay lab workers and use public lab services, how refineries are changing, or something.

At the same time I feel like we've entered an era where we've become the lore. If that is true then I would feel the Empires would still have much to do and say regarding capsuleers and their own business.

This is a perfect example of what I'm trying to convey. This sort of thing sets the backstory. It doesn't force players down some predetermined story or anything like that. It simply gives us context for our sandbox as it were.

If we're going to be walking around on the ground in Legion and flying from a different perspective with Valkyrie, this is the perfect opportunity to get people excited about the world they play in.

I think only way to get interest back into game is to limit HUGE, and I mean Gigantic corporations. The power of the big alliances is causing:
- Small renter corps that cause massive blue areas, and there in just few corps doing fishing in the big ocean.
- Valuable areas are held, and no one has possibility to gain wealth, only with the hard work, but its still worthless since you lose the wealth quick in big fights if you try to hold or regain your space from bigger alliances. (includes npc related money making, sites, plexes etc..)

Examples why..

Im not ranting about the "I dont want it to be this way", since I've already became inactive since all this. Been seriously thought about quitting subscriptions from my all toons until something happens to this situation. I feeling ok about the situation, since I dont have interest about it anymore.

Good news regarding the trailers in the latest EVE Online Show EVE Online Show : Episode One

Their ideas remind me what we saw with the EVE Online: Dominion trailer that attempted to recreate the authenticity of EVE gameplay with a cinematic angle. I look forward to it, but I personally hope it's not immersion breaking. :)

I joined the game because I had really taken an interest in Jovians and their lore- now I know just about all there is to know about them but they've faded into obscurity What?

Although I'm working on an idea involving them that I'm definitely posting to the F&I soon

I am not into roleplaying tbh but I miss the time were I used to be amazed by the depth of EvE Online and in conclusion its *scientific* articles and chronicles.

This is what bothered me about the new development approach in O7 EVE Show: "less downtime more blowing ships up".

The gameplay and scope is being dumb downed so much by these guys... one of the greatest aspects of this game is the logistics that goes on! It's not about quickly throwing players into the action like this is some sort of arena battle! Carefully managing your resources and fleet movement is supposed to be a massive aspect.

It's like we're switching the game to a mainstream appeal. "Streamlining" content, shallowing the depth so that attention spans aren't compromised...

To be fair, the first titan was named "Steve". EVE player attention spans are not known for their length.

That being said, I completely agree with the OP and such. I was originally a Dust player, and I fell in love with the depth and complexity of the lore, and was elated when I found out this deep first person shooter was connected to an even deeper and more complex game.

I was hooked. After I made some new friends EVE side, I joined the game. I actually got immersed in roleplay rather quickly, and it has been a major aspect of how I play ever since.

But I joined after any of these large events happened. I heard about the Sansha invasions, the way people had to figure out how the wormholes worked. That sounds amazing. But all we get are some provists with bounties on their heads who barely make an impact, and are swallowed up by large alliances.

The events don't really even appeal to me anymore. They are too easily exploited by the big guys, and it's not because I was miffed I couldn't get any plexes.

Both of my attempts to join EVE events and be apart of EVE history have either ended with me dying, or TiDi made my experience not worth the effort.

If CCP could add more actors to actually play roles dealing with roleplay and setting up events, preferably events with many staging areas, with little incentive other than loyalty, I think we could see more events be more immersive.

Yes there are capsuleers who only work for profit, but there are hundreds if not thousands (IC & OOC) that will come to the call of the empires simply because they were called. Look who won this recent donation thing for the T3 Destroyers! PIE did!

There was no profit in that, other than prestige.

We need more live events that give less monetary incentives, more immersive incentives.

The big guys won't come if there's nothing in it for them OOCly.

This goes hand in hand with the players in F&I crying for more content, however this is constructive. This actually has solutions attached. We do need more chronicles, more lore (another novel or a movie could not hurt). I know I, like many other players play for the immersion, the enveloping experience and the excitement of new things. However, with this said, things are drying up and becoming stale. Mostly due to massive, stagnant power blocs crying about how things aren't going their way, carebears bleating to be made safer, and just general dischord in the masses.

EVE is an in-depth game, and with the chronicles and lore not flowing, it too is becoming stagnant. As for Incarna, I would not expect to see that any time soon due to the vehement rejection by the blocs and other reasons. Personally, I'd love to see the door open, but not without something that adds more depth and breadth to the universe. With all of this said, more content through lore would be great. Because typically it springs up new generations of RPers and bloggers. That right there will add so much more to the community.

It's good to know that I'm not the only one feeling that the backstory aspect has kind of lost its... vitality, I guess. I've been working on putting together an EVE fiction contest. But somehow it just doesn't seem that people would be that interested at present.

If I'm got it wrong and people are inspired to write, let me know. We'll get it done.

There's currently a writing contest happening, today's the closing day however. You could follow 'Capsuleer Writing contest' thread to check for interest. It's in the RP section of the forums, so it tends to get missed.

And on the backstory thing, It's been very barebones lately, specially in the ingame news section. I'm doing my best to alleviate it soemwhat, but I'm an Eve player, not an endorsed CCP writer, so mainly writing about player interactions in Eve from an ingame view.

On that note... since the research race I'm a little more 'official' Still no ingame CCP news report about who won the Research race, so for an ingame perspective, it seems my newsblog Aurora News is currently one of the few sources to read about the conclusion from an ingame perspective.
