I liked reading the article and the discussion.

I also agree with those who feel this is not the best study that could be done on this topic.

The definition of trolling is something I simply disagree with. Unfortunately mine is based on the "early" days. Which means if you know its a troll, its probably not a troll. The definition in this article is what I would refer to as a useless response. The kind I just ignore while reading a thread. If I ignore a post because it's useless, then it's not a troll. IMHO.

- people that are bored

There is another type of troll, actually. It's the kind of trolling I do when I find a topic with too little dialectic - forcing that dialectic to generate greater discussion by posting a very unpopular opinion. A topic with no dialectic, no discussion, with everyone nodding in agreement, is a topic undiscussed. You can drive a whole conversation by forcing an opposing viewpoint, even if you don't really think the way you're posting.

I used to just do regular old Poe's and then one day, I realised I could get people more passionate about an issue by saying something really stupid about it.

Yes, and there's another sub-type. The trolls who are just pranksters, throwing out some absurd nonsense. just to see whether people will notice whether it's pure b.s. or not. Not malicious to sadistic, just a harmless joker who's easily amused by his own bull****.

I think that article used an outdated definition of "troll." They should have consulted with cyber sociologist and updated their internet demography classifications first.
