I can confirm I am all of those things. And add that I am also slightly masochistic as well.

I think it's safe to say that the researchers got trolled.

"The primary popular magazine whose title contains the word psychology, “Psychology Today, has a readership of more than 3 million people. Initiated in 1967, its early issues featured scientifically grounded and entertaining articles by eminent research psychologists, including Stanley Milgram, Philip Zimbardo, Nathan Azrin, Hans Eysenck, and David Lykken. Yet beginning in the 1970s and extending into the 1980s, Psychology Today shifted in content and style to appeal to a more general audience, featuring articles on such pop psychology topics as love, relationships, work, and happiness, most of them written by NON-EXPERTS from a largely NON-SCIENTIFIC perspective (Benjamin & Bryant, 1997). Despite a brief and ill-fated attempt by the APA to rehabilitate the magazine in 1983, Psychology Today’s LACK OF SCIENTIFIC RIGOR PERSISTS TODAY.” [capitalisation added by me for emphasis]

Reference: Scott O. Lilienfeld. American Psychologist, Volume 67, No.2, “Public Skepticism of Psychology: Why Many People Perceive the Study of Human Behavior as Unscientific”, pg. 119.

EDIT: There is a secondary lesson here, as well as the one about making sure your sources are reliable, it shows us why appealing to a broader audience is not always a good idea.

I think I got trolled by that article. Does that mean they are "Narcissists, Psychopaths, and Sadists" themselves?

Just read the original study article, and I can safely say it is rubbish.

First, the population is limited. Half the study was conducted on Americans that applied to their study online (and were paid to do so). Then the metrics were biased. Seriously, asking people how they spend their time online with a five choice question and one of those choices is suspiciously "Trolling other people". And then, when only 5.6% actually answered that they like trolling people, which is a whooping 21 people in the first part of the study by the way, obviously they scored higher in the Dark Triad test, for the three metrics it uses, making their overall mean higher. Oh hey, look at that plotbox chart, obviously not biased!

And the Dark Triad test itself is bad as it is, as it only measures how "bad" the personality is and doesn't contrast with how "good" it is and how the two sides of the personality react. It's like saying "100% of people that would hurt a puppy, are saddists". If you're going to prod the psychology behind trolling, you need to be more sutle than this.

Thankfully, like other skills, narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and sadistic personality can be cultivated with practice.

That article missed a trick or three, it didn't contain religious slurs, mobile phone taunts or music genre hints.

I rarely look ... hope I catch it. ^_^

At worst, asking the locals to relay it to me always works. (:

Boah now I'm curious .... *wiggling my butt on the chair in excitement*

np, ralph.

I resent the name-calling, though. "internet trolls are horrible people." like, I already feel bad enough.
