Please confirm. imgur.com down for EU at least, not for US? Thanks.

Can't access it ... but people from the US I talked to say they can.

Would like confirmations from people spread over the world.

Sorry for this thread.

So ... is it a DNS attack?
Is there anything I can do to avoid the issue on my end?

Thanks!

It looks like it's up.
(This tool is essential to me as a web programmer Smile)

edit: Checked manually by opening the site from southern Europe (international link through Deutsche Telekom) and it works.

East Coast.

Works fine for me. Looks like your hosting server is under DDoS, when I try to ping an alternative route it times out.

It's weird.
I understand that I'm out of the loop for quite a while,
but usually I thought I'm able to reach servers via the IP.

I asked one of the US people for the IP address of www.imgur.com ...
... but all I get is "unknown domain" when I try to access it.

Am I missing something?

Figured at least that part out.

Firewall? Possibly work firewall? Imgur is blocked by many common corporate firewalls.

Friend said that the IPs people are getting when pinging imgur are just redirects.

It's not hosted on a single machine ... well, d'uh, could've figured that part out myself. -.-

Anyhow ... what's really going on?

You can't access that site by using its IP address. Their server configuration is probably set up in a way that the IP address (199.27.76.193) you see when looking up the domain name is, in fact, a proxy/load balancing server. It's one of the measures of fighting DDoS attacks. I get the same message when trying to access the IP directly, but the site loads fine when using the domain name.

Anyway, you might have some issues with your DNS (it's usually the default one of your ISP) if you can't access the site through domain name. Try using an alternative DNS (instructions to change the DNS are easy and available at linked pages):
- Google Public DNS (my primary choice): https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using
- OpenDNS (my secondary choice): http://www.opendns.com/

Yep, switching to google's DNS helped.

Thanks for that!

Is there a connection to the massive disconnect that happened?

Could be. If your previous DNS was attacked with DDoS or having some technical issues, it may have caused unavailability of any number of other sites as well.

Now I wonder why that would happen ....
... but I have no idea which DNS was being used anyway.

Glad that my world only consists of three or four websites. ^_^

Thank you for your help! :)
