Sometimes my drones aggres rats spawning in the belt automatically, but sometimes I have to manually set them to attack.

How the hell does this work?

If your drones are already out in space before something aggroes you and your drones are set on 'aggresive', then they will immediately aggro the first thing that aggroed you. They will also proceed to shoot any other targets that have aggroed you after the first target is dead. However if you deploy your drones after you have taken aggro then they will just sit there and you must manually engage them.

In addition to the above...

Sometimes you will have to manually engage your drones even if they are out and aggressive prior to agro. If the rats attack one of your drones rather than you then only that drone will aggress, while this is not an issue with common rats in 0.6, 0.7 or so it can be dangerous in lower security space (where some rats will happily chew through your drones, leaving you defenceless).

Drones do not treat an attack on one as an attack on all, nor do they concern themselves with any other vessel on grid unless specifically ordered to (so if the rats attack a friend of yours, your drones will continue to orbit, oblivious to the nearby combat).

Also, yellowboxing will not cause aggression. For example, blood raider frigs may spawn 40 km away. They will yellow box you right away, but do not red box till closer to 7.5 km. Your drones will not attack those rats until they get to 7.5 km and red box.
