Not surprising, considering you would be hard pressed to find any other information about GamerGate on any of the related media outlets because they all work together in this. Suspected since the concerted release of the Gamers are Dead articles and verified with the finding of a google groups mailing list.

Maybe people shouldn't threaten and displace other human beings from their homes in order to communicate a social message. Something that is illegal is more newsworthy than your feeling of being offended at a poorly crafted media piece.

You lose legitimacy when members of the community break form and start doing inhumane things because the concept of freedom of expression is too difficult for them to understand.

Those terrible articles people are so bent out of shape about: people have every right to write them and market them. What you don't have a right to do is take your objection to something and turn it into physical violence.

Explain to me how "inflicting viewpoints" and sleeping her way to the top justifies death threats?

I fail to understand your view, given your prior history of expressing disapproval of the same thing happening in EVE when CODE. folks gank ships.

And she faked the death threats then called the FBI herself? That makes a lot of sense. Really.

Would you send death threats to these "social justice demagogues" because you disagree with them?

Did you have an opinion about people who doxx and threaten people they disagree with?

If those threats and the doxing are real, it shouldn't really surpise certain people in this "SJW" circles, it's the same form of "harassment" every other public figure on the internet has to face at some point. That doesn't make it ok, mind you, but what's really troublesome, in my opinion, is the reaction the general public (and the games media) have to it:
They jump to their defense, by default, even if there is no evidence for the threats other then their word and a few lines on twitter, they censor message boards, they call gamers worse then ISIS, they (mostly silently) condone doxing and harassment of the people that criticise the very same people that claimed harassment and doxing in teh first place, etc.

Sibyyl wrote:
You just called some people "social Marxists" and "hipsters". Do you think it would be OK for someone to have a disproportionate reaction to that?

No, not if they feel those labels don't fit them, at least... yet, they know they do, and they hate to be seen for what they are. On the other hand, if I was to publish articles claiming that games should no longer be about fun, but about social politics and moral education, then I should expect opposition... if I wasn't totally blinded by my own "convictions", that is.

Sibyyl wrote:
Or is terrible gaming journalism your highest concern in this issue?

It is, since the gaming media... those people that make a living of of gamers reading their articles and reports... have sided with people that only use the system for personal gains while calling all gamers mysogonisic, white cis het, neckbearded basement dwellers. Those folks are not about equality or fighting against "oppression", they just use their victim narrative to bully others and silence criticsm, and that's dispicable.

I was raised with a social conscious and a strong sense of justice... I never had to cry victim to reach my goals and I never had to find excuses for my own shortcomings, and seeing how certain people play the system like that sickens me...

...also: Death threats over twitter are nothing compared to what real political figures had to endure over the history, and if they would "own their sh*t", those selfstyled victims would call the authorities (something Anita Sarkeesian apearently didn't do, although she claimed she did) and not tweet about it!

You're right the feeling of persecution is completely imagined.

Take a look at comments to any of Mintchip's videos sometime. I'd never argue that Mintchip is anything but ignorant about all things EVE but I think you will agree that the comments are pretty screwed up. Why do gamers feel the need to make it so personal? Do you think this kind of thing is appropriate?

The point that someone has to leave their home because of death threats, with the FBI being involved in investigating.. maybe the assertion that the gaming community doesn't understand how to appropriately express their feelings is pretty accurate.

Don't be surprised about your guilt by association. You still seem to be defending these people.

So it is OK for someone to publish your phone number and issue death threats because you called them names. Got it.

You don't seem to understand that we can publish whatever we want to on the Internet (all the articles you are offended by are protected by free speech), but doxxing and death threats are not free speech and are in no way protected.

Do you honestly not see a difference between the two? Or are you just arguing for the sake of argument?

It's good nothing terrible happened to you, but you seem convinced that terrible things don't happen to women every minute of every day. Or maybe they should just shut up and not complain? Is that your recommendation?

So that makes death threats OK? Because politicians have gotten shot and blown up, it is OK to issue death threats via Twitter?

No, but there is a major difference.

Monk was a private citizen, playing a game anonymously, and blew up some space pixels and then got called at his place of work and/or home. Doxing was being used to point out inconsistency in EULA enforcement, as it clearly puts the 'Real life' in real life harrassment.

Quinn writes a column that is read by thousands, and used that column to attack/guilt-trip a large number of people.
Not saying that sending threats is the way to respond to that (well deserved derision works much better), but when your column is being read by tens of thousands, you have to assume that a few of them are going to react in an inappropriate way.

Then, when fuel is thrown on the fire - a 'gamer journalist' turns out to be a feminist simply doing a social experiment on gamers, tack on hypocrisy when it turns out she uses workplace sex to advance her interests.....yes its going to lead to a lot of trolling.

When you turn yourself into a public figure, expectations of privacy change.

When it comes down to it, Monk is just a private citizen playing a game on the internet.

Not so with public figures such as journalists - especially those who are clearly seeking out conflict.

I'm cool with calling both sides in the wrong and dropping the conversation, tbh.

Two parties on opposite sides of an issue pull some shizznet. "The public" divides itself cheering for one side or the other. More enlightened folks see the BS on both sides.

The underlined admission seems to be missing from responses unless the point is forced. I think people should declare that when they talk about #gamergate instead of *excluding* that statement until someone brings it up.

Public figures, regardless of what they say, are legally protected from doxxing and death threats just like private citizens are. People can legally publish whatever they want to as part of freedom of press** and they should not in any way have the expectation to be threatened and removed from their homes.

A public journalist has *as much a right* as Psychotic Monk not to expect a targeted personal reaction.

** Other countries have more restricted freedom of press rules, but none of these restrict comments on gaming or non-political gender commentary.

You know the whole death threat thing is to detract from the lesson to be learned. It's a common tactic I have seen in local political battles. Once you can make it all about "ooooooh someone made a threat!!!!!1!!!!!eleven!!!!" the entire story (Gamer Gate) gets pushed aside by the cohort media.

Meanwhile, it does not matter who did what, the beta/omega mangina indoctrination of men is so pervasive nothing short of civilization collapsing will fix it. Every story for all ages from toddlers to adult R rated films conditions men not to be men.

Nothing you post is going to change my mind. What's your end game? Reeducation? And when that does not work, what then?

RE Joss Whedon, even amazingly accomplished artists like him can voice shallow and fashionable opinions by assuming everything they read in that one article is true. People like Joss Whedon, or even Sibyyl and Herzog, can change their minds when they get more facts or listen more carefully.

Do you think the death threats are appropriate?

I was not asserting you made that comparison, I was asserting that Sarkeesian and the so-called press were making that assertion and voicing my disagreement with them, not you.

No, I do not think death threats are appropriate.

I also think that they are unrepresentative of the "community" or "climate". While they should never have been made, they have most certainly been used to assert that all disagreement with the "victim's" position is a stance in favor of the threats. This attempts to stop all discussion of the original topic. That is what I'm arguing against.
