What applications do y'all use for making instructional videos and such? I would like to maybe someday make videos of myself in action.

A common one is Fraps. It is simple but is expensive to buy and makes very large files.

Another alternative is OBS which is free and can compress the files much more.

There are many options and many opinions on the subject. Make a quick google search. I'm sure there is lots of advice out there that is more acurate for you.

Personally I use fraps but i'm thinking about moving to OBS.

i use OBS for recording. Latest version can even directly use the hardware encoder on my graphics card which reduces CPU load to a minimum even when recording with very high settings. (just found it out today - very happy about that :D )

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

Do keep in mind that the likes of OBS and the likes of Fraps are different classes of recorders with entirely different purposes in mind.

Not to mention, the question was software to make instructional videos - for which you need an editor, the recorder just produces the source material. You can skip the editor if you're making a shitastic voice-over-unedited-footage type video of course.

What would you suggest for an editor?

Outside of being able to output uncompressed files out-of-the-box for fraps, how are they "different classes of recorders"? From technical standpoint they're the same thing.

Also, +1 for OBS:

Sony Vegas is used by many but MS Moviemaker works fine too, some use power director.

all you need is a software that will allow you edit the video while also mixing tracks of audio. if its an instructional, as suggested already, the Movie maker that comes with windows 7 is all you need. (its not pre-installed, you have to get it from MS, its on the live package if i remember correctly)

record the game footage with OBS, then watch it a few times, write down what you want to have on the video. (make a basic flowchart/script) then record with a good microphone an audio track. if you don't have a good mic, then make it. just take a crappy one, make a stand of sorts so that you can speak to it clearly. preferably standing, and far enough so you don't distort sound, but close enough as not to sound like if you were recording inside a tunnel.

then edit both together. trim as much as you can, add titles, text and all that stuff, then export. keep it as simple as possible, no transitions or anything fancy, just fades, and it will look just like anything done on Vegas or more powerful editing software.

editors like Vegas have pretty much the same editing tools as the free tools, but they have a metric ton of extra features that you cant possibly make use of. :p most have to do with media types that can be used as sources, they also interface with specialized hardware. and you wont be using either.

if you really need something beefier, stable and feature rich while also free, try Blender. 90% of it is intended for 3d modelling, but it comes with a built in video editor that's surprisingly good and has very little to envy of more "professional" editors. the problem is, if you have never done video editing it will be a bit overwhelming.

in the other hand you can instead opt for "beefier, UNstable and feature rich" while also easy to use, try VLMC. http://www.videolan.org/vlmc/ think of it as Windows Movie Maker after years of abusing steroids. the great thing about VLMC is the output formats, just like VLC will read any video file, VLMC will output any video format.

Oh, God yes.... I stumbled upon Blender for video editing by accident. I was looking to do some editing and wasn't sure which software covers it, so I googled and one of the results was Blender youtube tutorial. I though, what the hell... isn't blender a 3d rendering tool... but decided to try it out.

Anyway... yes, Blender has some serious video editing capabilities not expected from a free 3d rendering tool. It is, however, a bit hard to learn, but nothing that a few video tutorials won't solve.

Oh god no. Don't ever use freakin moviemaker for anything. Not even your home videos Lol

I use Fraps to record and Adobe Premiere Pro to edit. Sony Vegas is the poor man's alternative to Premiere or Final Cut, but does a good job non the less. I think more people use Sony Vegas over any of the paid editors for obvious financial reasons (Both Adobe and Final Cut can cost up to 1100 dollars I think... Pirate )

In that they produce video of some sort, sure they're the same thing.

In that one is dedicated to producing lossless (not uncompressed) video with the lowest performance hit possible, while the other is dedicated to grabbing various inputs and passing them on for realtime lossy compression, they are just a tad different.

I would echo the Vegas suggestions as that's what I've used. Premiere Pro is another option if Vegas is unsuitable for some reason, as for this level of editing, I think they may as well be the same program. The only free video editor I've used is AVISynth+VirtualDubMod which is... probably not what you're looking for.

I use OBS for recording, it even works on my 6 year old computer.
For Editing I use Adobe After Effects, though I begun with Adobe Premire Pro.

On a serious note, not long ago when i ran Linux on my main desktop machine, I used FFMPEG via the terminal. It's the very best recording software there is (beats FRAPS).
File size you end up with is very small, and it doesn't lag your computer to hell while recording. Best of all, you can record in whichever settings you prefer since you type the exact settings you wanna use.
Only con, it's a royal pain to set up and get working on windows.

Then I used Blenders video editing to edit and compile the final video. A lot of people overlook Blender for video editing, which is a shame because it's free and it's got a powerful compositor (Node editor) which allows you to make really advanced effects.

TL;DR
FFMPEG (on Linux) and Blender
