only thing i use the launcher for is uppdating (now that we are forced to) other then that start the game via the .exe

The launcher BLOWS!

Repair.exe works just fine for updating (caution: this may not apply to Steam slaves)

I have removed some rule breaking posts and those quoting them. As always I let some edge cases stay.
Please people, keep it on topic and above all civil!

The Rules:
4. Personal attacks are prohibited.

Commonly known as flaming, personal attacks are posts that are designed to personally berate or insult another forum user. Posts of this nature are not beneficial to the community spirit that CCP promote and as such they will not be tolerated.

Only in EVE would this even be a "thing". Big smile

Not true :D.

Dungeons and Dragons Online also has a borked launch system. One solution is for people to use a 3rd party python launcher originally written for linux users who wanted to run the client through wine. A second solution is to use a 3rd party 'Preloader' launcher that preloads important files into the cache to keep the real launcher from crashing horribly. The really sad thing is that Turbine (the company behind DDO) claims they can't provide an official preloading feature in the launcher because it wouldn't work (despite it clearly working when someone not from Turbine codes it). The devs also said on the forums (since pretty much anyone who still plays the game uses either the python or preloader launcher) that they "assumed" the problem had went away and so they hadn't bothered to put any more effort into fixing it.

As much as people complain about CCP's responsiveness to bug issues, I find it worlds better than Turbine's. Stuff actually _works_ in Eve. I know there are all kinds of mechanics and meta-systems that aren't properly balanced...but at least when you turn on modules you're pretty sure your display won't lock up, or when you ask your ship to move it _will_ move. DDO is so screwed up that even climbing up ladders (which are as ubiquitous as jump gates in Eve) is a headache. DDO's bug reporting tool is broken and the standard response to bugs reported on the forums is to "bug report it".

In all seriousness, the dev responsiveness in Eve is awesome compared to the cesspools in other games.

That said, as a linux user, I've been using the exe file all this time. Eve's launcher used not to work at all, and still only intermittently works for me (but it will always patch). I have a patch icon and a play icon, it's just easier for me.

I havent really been in game enough lately, to have any of the disconnects. But never really had any problems with the launcher here.

There was an update to the launcher on Sisi the other day. And at the time of writing, I also havent done any research, to see if its related.

While the launcher has/had several issues with bugs, usability, and architecture, the latest round of troubles hasn't been in the launcher itself but with what appears to be its access to the launch server. Running EVE, or repair, directly jumps around that issue. Since the path to that server is different for everyone some customers have been fortunate to miss out on the "fun".

I also just use the Launcher to update the client, then use the exefile to launch the client(s).
If you don't use the Launcher to start the client, it does not get the tokens delivered and the Nex Store does not work (at least for me). As i don't use that s*** i don't mind.

How does the game handle the configuration setting for different characters when launching directly for exefile.exe?

I'm using /end /LUA:OFF to force storing of settings in local directory btw.

Have not done it - but I assume you would just create multiple shortcuts to the EXE file specifying a different startup directory for each shortcut.
