Eve and "fun"

Disclaimer: I like EVE. I've only been playing for a week or so now, but I think it's quite interesting.

I was attracted to EVE because of the sandbox nature of the game and that everyone kept saying "you can do anything!".

However, once I got into the game, I was notified by most players that while you can do "anything", a lot of it isn't very fun.

For example:

-- Mining. Recommended as a nice way to make ISK as a new player, but almost everyone I talk to in game finds it boring.

-- Hauling. Okay way to make ISK. Not very fun according to most players.

-- Crafting (or whatever it's called in EVE). Takes too long to train for a new player to make ISK.

-- PVE (ratting?). Not very good way to make ISK. Decent fun.

My question then is...what is fun for the majority of players? Again, I'm making the distinction between "fun for some" and "fun for most".

I tried my hand at a bit of everything before I realised what was fun for me. What's fun for me may or may not be fun for you, so I recommend doing the same: explore your options. On the other hand, you've signed on for a PVP game, yet I don't see PVP offered in the list of things to do. Strange, since that's the core feature of the game. Anyway, don't forget to add that to your list of things to try, welcome to EVE, and good luck. Hit me up in game if you need isk and I'll see what I can steal for you.

You may also find this useful.

Well that's my point in a roundabout sort of way.

Is PVP the only thing that's fun for the majority of players in this game?

I have no problem with that. I've always wanted to try something along the lines of smuggling/transporting goods or the such. But most people in rookie chat advised me it wasn't fun and to stay away from it.

So… I can't help noticing that you're talking a lot more about ISK than about fun. Is there a reason for that?

And you're gonna let a bunch of rookies tell you what's fun? Let me reiterate: I'm not going to tell you what you find fun. That's up to you. I can only tell you what's available to do, and you have to go do it and see what you enjoy. If you're letting other people tell you what's fun, then you're only restricting yourself in the sandbox, and you probably won't have much fun.

Also, when I say PVP, I mean getting in a frigate, putting some guns, tank and tackle on it, and blapping some fool that looks at you funny. None of this pansy hauling/smuggling crap, although that is PVP too since everything that happens in EVE happens in a PVP environment.

Personally I enjoy mining.. just as exploring, it feels to me like a caper where I am stealing things and getting away with them.

That said, I've never been more thrilled than during a roam and shooting at random people (and more often being shot at by them). Planning a highsec gank is also an interesting exercise.. way more exciting than shooting at a rock (it still won't make me stop shooting at rocks, because.. variety).

But more than these things, to me the most interesting part of EVE is the person to person interactions. No other "profession" in EVE has more impact or projection than the person who knows how to interact with others.

EVE doesn't have boring gameplay, just boring people.

Missions are a possible exception to this.

Can I just add that you haven't played EVE Online until you've played Ship Spinning Online.

you don't have to pick. try everything. stick with what is fun for you. Usually you end up doing several things, not doing one thing all the time.

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

A better sentence would be "you can do 'anything' that you want to do".

You have to create your own content - and not necessarily follow some of the predetermined paths. Right now I'm on a interceptor explorer, roaming nullbear and enjoying both the visual's of the galaxy (I even created a special playlist to go along with it) and the tears of nullbear resident's that don't like when a ship with 2 small turrets and no warp scramb steps on their lawn. That's what's "fun" for me right now.

So, what do you want to do?

P.S (PvE Missions L4 do give a lot of money)

Thanks for all the answers.

Then is hauling fun? Any recommended resources on hauling? Why was the general opinion on it as being "boring"?

Forget the general opinion.

Do you think it is boring? Hauling items up and down in the galaxy?

Explore all your options and ask yourself this same question for each.

Because I'm feeling quite patient tonight, I'll explain this one more time.

Try it, and find out for yourself if you think it's fun.

Any more of this "tell me what's fun" nonsense and I'll know you're a troll and start returning the favour. I've been getting really good at it lately, watch.

When it comes to what's fun in EVE, it's all a matter of preference.

I accept that other people have different preferences. Even when those preferences include facial tattoos and stretch pants constructed from sufficient material to shelter a small village. And their livestock. Some men enjoy dancing with other men without their tops on while others prefer the company of a woman two KFC family buckets away from upsetting the planet's rotational axis.

I read somewhere that Eskimos prefer women of girth as it provides warmth at night. I have seen the size of those igloos though and there is no way your mum would make it through the opening. You could probably just construct one around her and despite the hassle of having to trudge out into the snow every day to catch and prepare the eighty seals required to maintain her mass, it would be like a kiln in there.

Anyway, as a result of that acceptance of everyone having a personal preference, I'm not going to tell you what you prefer.

GL getting into hauling as a new player. You can hang out in the channel called "haulers channel" and watch the multitudes of courier contracts up for grabs. You'll notice right away that people want you to put up like 1 billion isk collateral for a 10 million isk reward. I kid you not, have a look for yourself.

I find pvp to be the most fun for me, although I also enjoy making money in a varierty of ways. For a younger toon mining really is probably the best isk you can make. But running lvl 1 and 2 combat missions will get your feet wet and get you used to flying your combat ships, just be aware that there are some big differences between pvp and pve content.

Exploring relic and data sites can pay well once u get out of hisec. Trading can make you a LOT of money, as well.

GL hope u find your niche, keep with it and I'm sure you will. Smile

hauling is one of thouse things that you don;t need to be at the keys for. it can be quite dull. but if you want to do hauling, you might want to look into joining a mining corp and helping out in mining ops. unless things changed, they love hauler.
