I know this post is asking for trouble, but I am seriously wondering why so many people really dislike Goons.

And before you start with "Tora, Marmites have been at war for them for almost a year !!!!", this has nothing to do with disliking Goons. Its purely an isks thing, as are all our contracts.

Well for starters...there are so many of them that they are literally "everybody else"

I like them. They make content. Some of them even give good fights.
(I also like killing them)

That was my point Lucas. Often when I ask people why do you dislike Goons so much, the most heard answer is "Well euhh..yeh...euhh... because!"

Right now I don't like them because they have lost their way. They've settled null. It's a big isk driven business. They have abandoned their roots and gone corporate. They are striving to make things steady and balanced so they may pile thier isk ever higher and fill their hangars ever fuller with.... well fake space pixels.

They have forgotten the most important goon core value - it's all fake.... everything - the empire, the isk, the.... all of it.

With the loss of their core value they are just another selfish corporate entity scraping ever deeper into the landscape of eve for fake gains. There is no fun or happiness in this endeavor. It will lead to a boredom and an eventual exodus to a game where you can actually have fun and do fun things.

When their idea of winning eve changed from peeing down my or your air hose to becoming the masters of eve the end began.

Why do I dislike the goons?? Because they have lost their way.

Because of their behavior and actions

Nobody likes a bully and Goons choose, consciously, to be EVE's bad guys.

I've played this game for about 10 years any I've seen a great many of the major alliances from the inside and the outside. Of all of these, Goonswarm was the one that surprised me the most. From the outside they look like an unorganized posse of cross-eyed gun-waving cretins with absolutely no plan whatsoever.... and if you fly in DBRB's fleets you could be forgiven for thinking this even if you are a Goon.

But inside the machine, this is a very VERY smart alliance with very VERY good organisation. They're sometimes short on vision, sometimes short on ambition, sometimes short on manners and "class" but they have the skills and resources to sit their massive stinking lard-butt down on the face of any other alliance in the game and suffocate them.

People like their heroes to be "good" at stuff. The best shot, the "fastest gun", the one who never gives up, the one who is the smartest, best looking etc.... Goons are none of that. They're EVE's biggest alliance but as an archetype they are (or they want you to think they are) more like Jabba-the-hut than Indiana Jones.... full of yellow-toothed neck-beards who post porn in fleet because they can't get a girl and are rude in local because they don't have the social skills to stand up to their boss in real life...

But in reality, it's an alliance like any other with the same cross section of EVE players as any other, but with one difference. If the FC says, "I want 250 people in this fleet" they don't get one. They get three.

And for a lot of people, this causes a disconnect.

I should mention that I am no longer in Goons but that doesn't stop me from understanding and, yes, respecting them.

Should i hate them?

Even if you do, people should wonder what is worse. An evil Goon enemy or a "Brave New Eve".

The only experience I have had with Goons in Eve was a newb toon blanketing anyone in rookie chat with 420420 isk bounties and talking trash to people....sometimes saying pretty cruel things. There were no blues on at the time so I think most of us just put her on ignore.

I have encountered many forms of Goonsquads in other games though, and they (for the most part) been complete asses with the trash talk in local and griefing in various forms. I don't know if these different group work under under one big gaming group or not.

Having said that...its just video games so no big deal to me. And I'm sure there are tons of goons that are just fine and don't cross the line. We probably just all remember the ones that do. And when you have tons of members, you will have more griefers and smack talkers. Just the way it is.

As a rank-and-file Goon in EVE online you wouldn't notice anything to this effect. I believe there is a sort of blog called "something awful" which iis more of a "failblog.org" than any kind of coordination between Goon groups in different games.

The impression I get is that being a Goon, regardless of the game, pretty much means "be the bad guy". How this is done is game specific and therefore not coordinated.

But frankly I'm just guessing. I was never in Goons higher echelons, so I'm just talking as someone who sometimes "heard" stuff.
