No, they make their money off the people that can't follow instructions properly. Gah, don't you know anything?

I've never fallen for a scam in this game. Doesn't matter how it's worded, if someone gave 3 billion to someone for them to double, they wouldn't get it back.

Oh yeah that's right! When you forget to end your amount in an odd number, and end it with .01, and do a twirl, enter the bonus room and sing a Mary Poppins song - that's where they make there money. Mark my words!

I have also heard that gambling is a great no risk way to make money

Is this true?

My advise to Op. Get out of station, stop paying attention to the trash in local, and go have fun in space. There's so many other players already in space that want you to have fun killing them. (or trying to) Big smile

Don't waste time with scammers and you'll find out how much fun EvE really can be.

Here are a list of opther common things you might see in local that are absolutely not true:

1. Willing to pay 2.9 billion for a plex, but only if you use this contract I just linked.
Red Flag: If you have 2.9 billion in escrow on the contract, why don't you just cancel the contract and buy a plex? I have no idea why people fall for this.

2. The subsidized ships scam. It works like this, someone posts a set of links to contracts for, by example, Imperial Navy Slicers for 1 million ISK, saying it's been subsidized by the Good Samaritan Company of Eve (or some such nonsense). Two of the links are to contracts that are already done, and they look good, 1 million each - better hurry and grab that last contract! Except it's for a billion isk, not a million.
Lesson: Read every contract twice. Then reread it. COUNT THE ZEROES! If you smell anything even the slightest bit fishy, move along.

3. Margin Trading. Someone mentioned this scam earlier but basically it depends on you not having a thorough knowledge of the market for the items you are trying to make a quick profit on. No one buys things for three times the going rate. NO ONE. Rule #1 in Eve. If it's too good to be true or the deal of the century or makes you think "I'm gonna make more money thn Scrooge McDuck!", it's a scam of some sort and you are about to lose your pants. You can usually spot these in local as the "LOL Market trading while drunk wish I had the ISK" bots

4. Station Trading. Do not ever do this unless you are trading to an alt (one of your own). If someone tells you they can't do a contract for something, run, do not walk, the **** away.

5. ISK Doubling: Yeah, you got a handle on this one already.

6. Trust NO ONE in Eve with your ISK or assets. Do not trust me, do not trust your corp (past the point necessary to be in a corp), do not trust the happy guy who tells you he can get you into Goons for 500 million ISK. Hell, I don't even trust my own alts. There is exactly one person in Eve you can trust - Chribba, Lord of the Veldspar, Bearer of all Things, Captain of the Mighty Veldnaught. He you can trust*.

*Until he finally decides to end this ten year long con he's running and scamper to the hills with everything in the game that isn't nailed down.

You might think this is a joke but alts are sneaky motherfuckers.

people use alts named close to known private or public characters or freighting companies to nab courier or other contracts.

This thread just proves that there are genuinely dumb people out there. The only reason these 'local spam' type of scams perpetuate is because of cretins believing the most thinly-veiled attempts at legitimacy.

Rule of thumb: If you can't figure out how someone is possibly profiting from it, it's a lie or a scam. This goes for ISK doubling, margin trading market games, "too good to be true" contracts, etc.

I doubt your particular ISK doubler was "API verified". How was this "verification" performed? Did he send you a screenshot? Those are easily doctored. Did he send you to his website? Spoofing information on a personal website is easy, too.

The way to correctly verify data provided through the Eve API is:

  1. Obtain the actual API key ID and verification code.
  2. Find a neutral, 3rd party, trustworthy tool that allows you to see the data the key exposes. There's a whole variety out there, such as EveHQ, websites like Jackknife's API Auditor, or for certain things, even your favorite fitting tool, like Pyfa.
  3. Plug the API key in, and look at the data.

Alternatively, if you like reading raw XML and want to be absolutely sure (or you don't trust 3rd party tools), you can go directly to the API itself: https://api.eveonline.com/char/WalletJournal.xml.aspx?keyID=XXXXXXXX&vCode=YYYYYYYYYY (Replace the X's and Y's with their key ID and verification code).

If all of those options still show money being transferred that was never received, you should file a support ticket or bug report, as it is now an issue of API accuracy, which is a big deal.

Don't trust the ISK Doublers, the Quintuplers on the other hand are genuinely legit.

What part of sending virtual currency to another player absent any binding guarantees seemed like a prudent idea?

I went online and purchased a guide to scamming on the internet once, sadly it never arrived in the mail / post like they said it would Roll

Please. Everyone knows there is no Chribba. As for Isk Doublers, some are legitimate some are not. I keep a running white list of legitimate Isk Doublers. For a small donation to help maintain the list I will be happy to check it for you to verify whether the Isk Doublers that you are dealing with are for real.
