Who is your idol?

Another idol of mine is Beck Weathers. I always have my copy of Left For Dead on me (I sort of consider it to be as important as my phone). This book is marked up everywhere and its spine gave out a while back.

I always go through it before a solo climb. Not really for superstition or to build up some false confidence of survival.. but because it reminds me about how fragile we are. I have a tendency to forget that.. as stupid as it sounds, and that is a very dangerous thing on a climb.

And as for classically trained professional adult film entertainers.. I might possibly have a very slight crush on James Deen (edit: notice the double 'e'). That's not the same as an idol is it?

Very difficult for me.

I have no single idol, more a random list.

My father is an inspiration to me and the man who taught me a great many things. Not least he is the man who after i was shot got me such a shouting at when i was feeling sorry for myself and pushed me to pursue my current employment.

Then there's certain members of my historical family who i look up to. This served me well in university. Any high bred toff who talks down to me, well I have a family line of murdering bastards just as long as you, and we were better at it, so dont you dare look down your nose at me you chinless feck. Twisted

After that I deeply admire a number of 18th and 19th century figures, notable explorers, engineers, inventors, soldiers, writers and travelers who were sometimes the same person. Reading about their travels and adventures into the unknown are fascinating, when you think about that they had absolutely no idea what the hell they'd find or even if they'd come back.

Finally a number of people I met during my military service. Especially one of my instructors in officer school. He taught me more in a short time about philosophy and how to look and think about the world than my entire education rolled up. He was my John Keating a la Dead Poets Society without the chair standing or sacking that followed.

Dunno... he's cute though... in a totally non threatening kind of way... a bit like Patrick Dempsey. Blink

Speaking of teachers: My former english teacher in highshool was an awesome women... she is practically the only reason I'm almost a native speaker today, and she introduced me to english literature.

Didn't know you were climbing. I would really love to do it, but there a no mountains in Denmark. The tallest point here is a freaking bridge.

Derrick. I sort of envy you. I never get to know any of my grandfathers as both of them died before I was born. So all the stereotypical things you do with your grandfather is something I have never experienced.

I respect my father and appreciate what he has done for my sister and I. Our well being has always been high priority for him. But I would not call him my idol as he spent too much time on work rather than on my sister and I.

I think I'm in the same boat as Graygor. I don't really have some specific idols, but rather just some people I respect. When I was younger there was one of my friends I looked up to. He was 4 years older than me, but we were still best friends. I enjoyed playing with the big boys and he had all sorts of cool stuff. Now that we got older, I see us more as equal. The 4 year age difference doesn't really matter anymore.

As for celebrities / well known persons. I can't really name anyone.

Seriously clichéed internet answer, but... Carl Sagan. When my dad purchased our family's first VCR, it came with a 3-pack of blank cassettes. The first thing he ever recorded was the entire Cosmos series on PBS, and I can't begin to count the times I watched it. In terms of igniting my imagination and giving me an idea of what I could do with my life, nothing else inspired me nearly as much. After receiving Pale Blue Dot (coffee table format) as a birthday gift some years later, I came to see life as an opportunity to improve the condition of our species, and maybe our long-term prospects for survival.

...and here I am playing a video game in my free time. Roll

geez, i don't see any saints on anyone's lists. it figures that the lot of you are sinners :p

yukio mishima, david wojnarowicz, egon schiele, st francis, yayoi kusama, st sebastian, marx, kafka, st dymphna, joan of arc, and uh, jesus i guess

i'm not sure if robert de montesquiou counts as an idol since i usually disapprove of rich jerkoffs who coast off of the work of their more talented friends but he seems like a dude who really knew how to have a good time, so i might as well put him up there with people whose most notable achievements involved dying in style

My Idol is ... none

And if you ask me, have none either, better for you in the long run, be your own idol if you need one, and even that is just cheating yourself.

i was going to write a scathing response but then i thought "what would yukio mishima/david wojnarowicz/egon schiele/st francis/yayoi kusama/st sebastian/marx/kafka/st dymphna/joan of arc/jesus do" and since the answer would probably be to establish a free mental health/veterinary clinic, wage war against foreign influence and then channel my neuroticism and self-loathing into making a bunch of moma-retrosepctive worthy art before getting executed in a cool and beautiful way, you can understand why i decided to sit this one out.

you guys seem surprisingly well adjusted (except for the person w sasha grey as an idol, that's icky); i would've expected a lot more angry and misunderstood nerds in your aspiration list. also apparently rob montesquiou, despite knowing lots of cool people, was one of those irritating campy jerks of which i do not enjoy, so just pretend i mentioned jack london, the guy who made me feel cool for being a bitter, angry little kid who liked wolves better than people and made dog noises a lot

here's a cool wolf fact i learned as a kid; during winters with heavy snow, wolves generally prefer to follow the tracks of larger animals (or other wolves, or cars) because it's easier walking through snow that's already been trod thru than trying to forge your own path completely. and even if it takes them a little out of the way of where their final destination is supposed to be, it's ok, they're wolves, they're dumb wild animals who can pretty much make it wherever and i probably wouldn't trust one to know where it really wants to be in the end anyway

I don't have any real idols IRL, but a bunch of people that I really admire for what they achieved; people like Leonardo, Tesla, Mark Twain, David Lynch.
