According to Articles 183 and 184 of the Criminal Code, in effect since 1998, “it is a punishable offense to engage in gambling and betting on a professional basis, to encourage others to participate in these activities and to derive direct or indirect income from having the activities take place on one’s premises.”

So this means we'll never see ingame casinos right?

It all depends on what "a professional basis" means which is most likely defined elsewhere.

No, because the servers are based in London.

My opinion is that a game like this should try to steer clear from an official activity which is considered rather detrimental and addictive.

The players should be free to provide gambling content, though.

However, courts have declared in-game assets to be of monetary value with regard to law enforcement. Anyway, I thought this thread was about living with active volcanoes and trying to rationalize it as NOT a gamble...Blink

Which is how Pachinko parlors operate in Japan where gambling is similarly strictly illegal.

Murder is illegal in Iceland, too. Yet, behold...... PvP in EVE.

aka: when are you all going to learn that EVE ISK (despite technically having an exchange rate) does not equal real currency, and assets in EVE are not taxable (for those who were worried that the American IRS was going to tax our spaceships)?

In-game casinos (run by ccp) would be an excellent isk-sink. Way back in the Everquest days, some folks figured out a duplication exploit. As the currency in EQ was real coin you had to either carry around or store in the bank, it worked for the currency too. Soon the economy was literally hosed all across the EQ servers.

Then came the casino.... mopped that problem right up.

Some thoughts that come to mind based on the replys-

I'm not an Icelandic attorney but I think that in

"gambling and betting on a professional basis"

Gambling and betting on a professional basis can be separated into two separate statements. As gambling (or facilitation thereof) in itself may be banned as well as the private acts of individual gamblers (or facilitation thereof) .

Also that

" to derive direct or indirect income "

Should be paid attention to as CCP's PLEX model, may constitute 'indirect income' through ISK gambling if it were to ever happen.

Are you using the same "logic" that tinfoil hat people use to speculate about "chemtrails", and deduce wild assumptions about fluoride in the tap water?

Because that's what it sounds like.

It's just that we had that one guy that was telling everyone the IRS was coming to tax our crap in EVE. No amount of common sense could sway his paranoia. He went on about it for nearly a week. FEMA had to come out to clean up the forums, and the guy flipped his top about that because he believed in FEMA Death Camps and mass graves in rural Missouri. He took Fred hostage, and then killed him trying to escape.

Fred was my friend. :(

First of all, which courts and what jurisdiction does that apply to?

Secondly, citation needed.

While I was going through treatment, and playing less EVE to keep from stressing myself with the very real possibility of EVE burnout (everyone knows it can happen) and making myself physically worse for it, I have a confession to make...

I subbed on SWTOR.

I checked it out for free at first, and enjoyed it. For a themepark game, it made getting through my treatment a lot less traumatic. Even now that my treatment is complete, I'm still playing it more than EVE. For the moment, anyway. I'm still working on the story, learning about the game. Got into as much PVP as I could and became pretty good at it.

Anyway, since we're on the subject of hot avatars, I'll make my point. I got around to making a second toon, a female Cathar. I've never played an MMO with a female toon and thought I'd give it a go, and I like the Cathar race.

I'm the kinda guy though who doesn't really care much about how his pixels looks, and I just hit random on the toon. The first click, I had the sexiest toon I'd ever seen in a video game ever. I mean, in my opinion. What I find sexy, you may not. But anyway, it was still pretty impressive, and when it comes to women, real or otherwise, I'm not easily impressed.
