Did CCP make a colossal BUSINESS mistake by banning Somer?

While I wait for the patch to load, I thought I'd pose this question, which I haven't really seen discussed.

Here's a hypothetical:

Someone invents a very popular new game that has almost nothing to do with EVE. (An out-of-EVE gambling game, for instance.)

In order to play this game, you must periodically buy EVE PLEX with real currency from CCP or an authorized reseller.

Thousands of people buy thousands of PLEX they wouldn't have otherwise bought and the only real effect on EVE is that trillions of ISK accumulate in an account or twelve and sit there doing not very much.

To me, that's a freakin' bonanza for CCP. That bonanza is gone.

Am I wrong?

Compromising the integrity of your business would have been the bigger mistake, especially after the trust was already damaged by the first incident.

Once you establish a precedent for rules exemption for one guy, simply because of their size, then the rules cease to be enforceable because everyone else will (rightly) protest that they have to follow them when others don't.

Somer was banned for breaking CCPs rules. It's not a business mistake to enforce your own rules.

Also, what if the real business mistake was made by somer?

Afterall, he could have still earned money using the scheme without offering the isk incentive rmt work around. Now he gets nothing.

I feel that a single “no" would be a little too short an answer.

It was discussed, multiple times and for many many MANY pages. Literally trillions of electrons were terribly inconvenienced by the length of the discussions on this topic.

Here's a totally hypothetical situation in no way related to any real life events which may (or may not) have already (or potetially could) occurred.

Here's the tl;dr: Somer got caught with his hands in the cookie jar. For the second time. CCP (rightly) decided that giving him a second pass for the same transgression would probably do a significant amount of collateral damage to their reputation and their ability to enforce their own EULA and TOS. Some is not, as much as he would like to have us believe, a victim or a matyr. He actively decided to break the rules, and as a result, got banned.

Hooray for justice.
Long live CCP.

Can we let this go now, ffs?

CCP could also hike their sub by 100%.

Now that would be a colossal business mistake.

Somer made $135k from September 2010 to May 2013 with Shattered Crystal. At 8% commission, that's $1.6mn in GTC sales from him in 3 years. It's a nice amount of money but over that timespan it's a drop in the bucket for CCP, considering that GTC sold by a retailer like SC or MD is purchased wholesale from CCP.
