UK based data recovery

So - my sister brings back the PC I built for her 3-4 years ago - refusing to boot.

She also brings the external HDD I got her to buy for backups - empty.....

Turns out the PCs HDD is toast - from the symptoms it looks like read / write head failure.

So - needing a recommendation for a good, reasonably priced UK based data recovery service - I've had one quote which came in £100 (+ £400-£500 if the recovery is a success) - and I think + VAT - seems a tad high to me.

Anyone recommend somewhere a bit cheaper - or is that what its going to cost to get some/all of their photos back ?

That's pretty much it -- a lot of places will be signifigantly more expensive, depending on how serious it is and whether or not they have to ship it out. My (non-profit) workplace lost its main data-server last week, and the estimate for repair was $1500-$2200 Cdn (including shipping to Ontario and back, from the West Coast of BC).

We just made a new server and restored from a backup.

I can't get rid of my darn signature!  Oh, wait....

That offer is a deal, data recovery isn't the easiest thing to do.

what are the symptoms that brought you to that conclusion? and did you give your sister a backup strategy and teach her how to implement it? if not then there really wasn't a point in convincing her to get an external HDD for it.
other than that. ya, that is a really good price. I've heard of it going upwards of 20k for bitstream recovery of the data on the failed hard drives.

Knoll Ontrack

Worth every penny and I think Thames Valley Police HQ use them to recover incriminating data.

Your current quote is about average, I doubt you will get a significantly better deal from a reputable company.

You will be looking at several hundred quid (best case) to recover data from a disk where the heads are dead or the head servos are dead.

I don't consider that unreasonable.
