Open letter to CCP: I fear for Eve's Future

This message is mainly directed at CCP.
I am not leaving Eve yet (at least another 10 months).
No you cannot have my stuff.

Every now and then you hear the Doomsayers stating "Eve is Dying". Eve is not dying, it has been growing subscribers, but I fear for it's future. I have been playing Eve since 2007 or so and one thing is for sure, Eve is not the same game it used to be. I recently started following Star Citizen more in depth and even got a basic ship package; It's everything I wanted Eve to be.

I started playing Eve in high school. I came across Eve by searching "Space games" and "Games like Freelancer", and Eve was the only game that was somewhat what I was looking for. This is not to say I don't like Eve, but there are just so many problems with it.

  1. Lock and F1
  2. Balance
  3. The community is good and disgusting
  4. Eve is static
  5. Eve is old
  6. There are up coming games that fill the void in the space genre

Eve PVP can be fun, but for the most part all it is is locking a target and waiting for one to blow up. There is a lot of skillful PVP out there I have seen, but there is more of lock and F1. This is undeniably dull.

The most obvious problems in Eve are the balance and mechanics. There is a whole subsection of the forum for this so I won't even name a few.

I think the second problem with Eve is the community. The community is some of the smartest people out there: Metagaming, Third party developers, and just how we find a way to exploit everything in the game. However the community is absolutely disgusting. I can guarantee without editing this post that one of the first few responses will be someone asking "Can I have your stuff". There is just the culture of trolling, intentionally causing people pain (not to be confused with non-consensual PVP), don't help the new players, and the entitlement people feel from CCP. These are not good and hurt the community and nothing can be done because that is what Eve Online is about now.

Being Static; I am talking about procedural generation. Every NPC, Mission, asteroid belt, anomaly, system, station is the same. Procedural generation makes each thing unique so no 2 missions are alike, you can do damsel in distress with 5 wave of battleships, or 7 waves of enemies elite frigates, you never know with procedural generation.

Eve is Old. Players have been able to accumulate dumb amounts of wealth. Players have done all that before: taking sov, losing it, ganking, lowsec, militia, everything. The games code is ancient and becoming more and more inefficient. Honestly, I would look into making Eve 2.

With a plethora of new space sims coming out, I have given Star Citizen a chance on Friday. I began diving further into it. More and more I find out about the game is that it is EVERYTHING I wanted Eve to be. There is only one snag on it though, the full release is expected for Q3/Q4 2016. In the meantime, I have access to the Alpha and Beta modules.

But with games like Star Citizen, you cannot have 1000 people or more on a single grid, it is unrealistic. There is still unanswered questions. And above all else It just isn't Eve, its the whole Eve universe in one game: FPS, twitch controls like Valkyrie, and Capital ships and large scale stuff like Eve. The in-game economy, the way you meta and fly, the thing you can do will all be different. So, will Eve die? No, people will stay with Eve as it is there type of game. Will Eve take a subscriber hit? Maybe, I know I will most likely move over to another game. I used to have 12 accounts, now I run 3 and probably soon 2 or 1. I think CCP needs to look at what they can do and start developing something new, and not just patch Eve.

I suggest editing out specific references, CCP will use that as a reason to gank the thread.

It took only one post to prove that you're suffering from either a Sense-of-humour-ectomy or Cranial-Rectal Inversion Syndrome, possibly both.

It's not Lupus though, you've got that going for you.

Speaking for myself, I quite enjoy being called disgusting. Absolutely disgusting, o-er, behave Oops

Good luck to Star Citizen though, hopefully their community will be mature, respectful and wildly boring.

Well at least I got in on the first page of this one.

.

They say most of your brain shuts down on the EvE forums. All but the impatient side, and the sarcastic side. No wonder I'm still awake.

actualy the community in eve is quite good if you look in the game... sure there is the odd one writing you a hatemail after you blowed his stuff up, but much more often people will ask what they did wrong or just type gf.

forums are always a place for the trolls and the haters, it's in every game. most other games have also way more idiots ingame than eve by a large margin!

Only good point I saw in there was the one about procedural generation. EVE could definitely benefit from something like that.

So really, what your entire fear comes down to is the realisation that you don't actually want to play EVE.

I read "I'm quitting the game" and then "no you can't have my stuff" so I'm just writing off your opinion and not even reading. So some carebear is whining and quitting EVE and doesn't even care about the community enough to make charitable donations of his items who's usefulness is soon to be void.

it's not trolling, it's a question born out of a genuine concern regarding wealth redistribution. describing posters as 'disgusting' when they've only got your stuff's best interests at heart isn't very grateful Sad
