was thinking of trying exploration, what ship would be a good starting point? also if you are in a corp and go off to do your exploration thing, would you not in a sense be soloist? by this i mean you could be gone for weeks and not bump into any corp members for ages and miss out on corp stuff.

Most folk use two boats when starting to explore:

- a scanning boat ( scan bonused hull with probe launcher such as the T1 science frigates [ heron, imicus, probe, magnate ] or their T2 equivilant )
- A combat mission boat to actually run the site.

The type of site you find will define how big a boat you need to bring in general. You can google the sites and see what the recommended ship to use is.

As your skills improve, you can get away with an all in one boat such as an arbitrator, vexor, hurricane or other swiss army knife hull.

Exploration doesn't take so long as to keep you away from your corp for a long period of time. That said I'm sure you could wander off and find yourself gone for weeks if you so desire.

You should be able to start simply by scanning down signatures in a small cluster of systems near your home base. Move on if you have to, but you'll probably find something there.

A pair of ships (prober+combat) does work, but it's less than optimal. The ultimate ship for explorers (unless you like dualboxing) is a T3 (usually a Tengu, though all four work well). This is because a T3 can have a probing bonus and still fit a perfectly capable combat fit.

When you're starting out though, a dual ship system can work. Also a all-in-one ship that's not bonused for probing can work quite well too if you are halfway decent at probing (probing is 90% practice and 10% SP). The Arbi and Vexor are the most popular T1 exploring ships, due to their drones. Assault Frigates also work quite well for highsec exploration.

The main drawback of a dual-ship setup is that you have to stop what you're doing to go back and get the combat ship. Not only is this time consuming, but it also increases the risk that someone else will come along and run the site before you can.

If you're interested in exploring, you should join the 'Exploration' channel in-game. There are many experienced explorers that hang out there and most of us are more than happy to answer questions (provided they're sensible questions, not just someone being too lazy to stop and think).
