Fact of the matter is that this equipment is rarely used to recover a downed partner. If a situation is bad enough to warrant such response and equipment then the State Police or The National Guard should be called in. Local, relatively small jurisdictions rarely if ever need this type of equipment. This stuff, often times, is excessive in force and excessively expensive for the rare cases that they are needed.

Alice's Restaurant by Arlo Guthrie Sort of a poetry-rap about crime (dump ground violations) and punishment in small town America. Cops, courts, draft, war, periphery citizens, that stuff. This is from when young Murikens used to sit around coffee shops and discuss heavy social things, and make plans to do something about it.

People were kind of extremist in those days, I guess.

Paramilitary police run by big bureaucracy have popped up everywhere, thanks to Federal grants that have strings attached.

RE: Ferguson. Violent robber got shot by police... Crowds riot... President throws gasoline on the fire. (They used this story in a previous episode, or is this a rerun?)

Nah. Has more to due with state coddling of segments of the population who simply refuse to conform to the rules civilized society sets down.

Its really simple.

-Don't steal cigars and manhandle storeclerks half your size.
-Don't walk down the middle of the road and hold up traffic, especially not 10 minutes after committing a crime.
-And, for godsake don't punch out police officers, attempt to flee, then turn and bullrush them while they are pointing guns at you.

They deserve derision - not pity and memorials.

I'm right there with you on the militarization of the police. Not comfortable with some of the hardware being distributed to
civilian law enforcement agencies these days - much of it looks more at home in Iraq or Syria, not Montana or Missouri.

But I'm not sure the riots in Ferguson are really the most compelling context.

Except for this one. A nearby gun shop was also protected.

Interestingly, AR-15s are flying off the shelves in St. Louis now, sales have tripled. Both black AND white homeowners are spurring sales, stated reason for the purchase? Home defense.

When police are not willing to protect your property from mindless, looting mobs, assault rifles and extended clips did the job. Same thing happened during the LA Riots, where Korean shopkeepers successfully defended their storefronts with AK-47s.

If faced with a large number of violent assailants, sustained, semi-automatic fire and large magazines are far preferable to deer-rifles or shotguns.

I have more problems with sniper rifles tbh.
How can it ever be considered self defense to kill a man from 1000 meters away?

Needing to own a gun isn't a solution. It's akin to treating the symptoms. (Actually it's more like mopping the floor outside the operating room, but I digress.)

The real problem is: do you see your police as people who "serve and protect" or do you see them as guards with the implicit task of keeping you on the reservation?

Thoughts:

-I can't tell which is more offfensive - naming a business 'YOLO' or the "Don't loot, we're black" sign painted on the plywood.

-Also, they hit TACO BELL? Isn't that a hate crime in the Obongo era?
Still, raiding a faux-Mexican outlet? Thats it, these looters have GONE TOO FAR! Screw the SWAT teams - call out the Marines! Lol

-That liquor store got TAGGED - but not as bad as those mini-marts that were burned to the ground. I suppose mini-marts are more expendable.

How frighteningly true and sad that is!

Although this is a completely different situation to what's happening in Ferguson the core roots run to the same place and watching this disturbing footage one would think that this happened in the white supremacist-run, apartheid era government. But it didn't, it happened in the new Democratic and now for 20 years majority run "rainbow nation".

Just so we are clear, there are more white people being coddled by the government. It just so happens that a larger percentage of the black population tends to abuse the system. Also, rarely do white people riot as most of the areas where the Government and its henchmen over step the white population are not in densely populated areas where rioting and looting can reasonably occur due to lack of population density and all the infrastructure that accompanies said density.

So, as it turns out, the shooting that touched off all of this?

It was justified. The autopsy report showed that the only way Brown could have sustained those injuries was if he was charging at the cops with his head down.

No "backing away with his hands up", that was a lie.
