So we had some real bad thunderstorms here, but thankfully i was home and could pull out things to protect TV and such.

Today i bought a surge protector that has two varistors,two fuses and a gas discharge tube. The people at the store had no clue how the gas discharge tube worked or what it was. They had to call their Tech peeps but all they could say is that it was a sort of fuse.

Does anyone know how the gas discharge tube works?, google had no clue and just showed me surge protector specs.

Can you post a link to the item? I've never heard of this set-up. I can only assume that the gas tube would crack and momentarily push out any oxygen from the fault area to prevent an electrical spark and fire.

I was hunting for sick loot, but all I could get my hands on were 50 corpses[:|]..............[:=d]

It looks like tiny/small white spool coils on the circuit board. It handles high voltages passing through and is suppose to short circuit intentionally if a lot of ridiculous stuff was plugged into it or demanded volts suddenly (guitar amp, vacuum, +5TV's etc.).

It's a gas mixture which conducts an electric current after becoming ionized by a high voltage spike. The failure occurs when the triggering voltage rises high enough that the device becomes ineffective. - pretty much what the wiki says.

The wiki didn't appear in my google searches Ugh, thanks bunches.
It worried me when the store didn't know what it was when they sold it, and Desivo Delta Visseroff unless you know Swedish linking will unfortunaly not help Big smile

I know you can test the charge of a car battery by putting your tongue on the leads. If you cant speak for an hour afterwards you know it's full.


As for the buying of (electrical)equipment in a store, if I don't know what it does/how it works, and there's no sales person that can explain it to me either then I look for another store.

well, mostly the guys behind a bench in such store are just there to sell stuff.
