That about sums it up, I had a teacher in high school who had witty humour, always happy and all that, an overall good guy then I heard years later from another guy who had also studied in his class that he had hanged himself for no apparent reason, right before his daughters graduation day from that same high school.

Maybe that stress of always being funny and cheery just takes it toll over the years.

RIP Robin Williams. A true master of comedy and making his audience, whether in stand-up, on television, or in the movies, lose themselves with laughter, which only makes the way he died that much more saddening. o7

Just in case there's anyone else going through, or think they might be going the same kind of depression, or have suicidal thoughts, remember that there's always someone you can talk to, and that there's people and groups that you can always reach out to and get help (and the same goes for those who think they might know someone that is suicidal).

(from a post by daybreaker on reddit:)

Guys, depression and mental health are very serious and can affect anyone regardless of how rich or successful you are. There's an unfortunate social stigma that you're wrong or should feel ashamed for having mental health issues, but please dont be too scared to seek help if you are having problems. http://www.mentalhealth.gov/get-help/

Depression kills. Many people think they understand what it means but they don't.

Depression is not having a rough life and feeling sad because of it.
Depression of when you can live in utopia and still fell cold and empty inside.
It is an injury or presence that never goes away and can never be cured, only managed or mitigated.

I just wanted to say this because I struggle with depression and I can understand the desire to check out early as it were. It's not my path but it's also not my place to judge the paths of others.

I didn't see all his movies but I adored him, I found his sense of humor very relevant. RIP you crazy goof ball.

Thank you for being strong/brave enough to be open enough about it that others might get a glimpse.

all I can think of, he was an even greater actor then I thought, I mean if he was clinicly depressed, on the screen he always seemed so full of life and joy.

I was browsing wikipedia last night, came to his page there and read he was deceased even before I heared it on the news. I thought it was a joke at first :(

Many artists struggle with depression.
In some cases this darkness can make them better at what they do by means of sublimation.

amanda palmer is a good example of sublimation being used to proportionately enhance artistic ability.

The biggest problem isn't that depression exists but that in many cultures talking about it is seen as faux pas. It's a social norm specifically where I life to not talk about these kinds of problems. Even when you might want to talk about them you will have a hard time finding people to listen.

It's worse when you are famous like Robin because you have to be that much more selective with who you talk to about how you really feel.

What ill miss most are his quips and general whimsy on life. I feel sad at being deprived of his points of view on future political, social, economic and technological changes we will see.

One of his funniest things ive seen was years ago when there was a technical hiccup at some tech show and he entertained the audience by roasting the panel.

I digged out my old Pioneer Laserdisc player from storage along with some, of what I think are precious, cinematic gems like "Good Morning, Vietnam", "Dead Poets Society", "Awakenings", "The Fisher King" and "Good Will Hunting".

RIP Sir.
