After hearing of so many battles turning after FC/FCs get taken out. Why do they not stealth away from fleet on grid and still operate? I realize that isn't as much fun, could mean a huge difference in the isk balance.

They usually fly tanked ships, are pre-locked by logistics so killing them isn't easy.

They also serve as anchors for friendly ships, have a better perspective from the middle of the battle and can keep ships locked to judge whether or not they can break hostile reps.

1. They have alternate fcs for when they get taken out
2. They're not cowards

Least that's from my experience, which isn't saying much....

The FC's job goes far beyond simple target calling. If that's all it were about, it would be a job that anyone could do. In a cloaked ship away from the fight, they would be able to do little to nothing more than call targets, and would be at the wrong vantage to be able to tell if it were optimal, or even possible for the fleet to engage said targets.

And FC in a pod, acting as an anchor would be more useful than an FC cloaked somewhere else on grid.

Fleet fights, like most pvp in EVE is largely affected by range. Ammo types, your fits, what ships you are flying and what kind of support you bring will all be dictated by range.

An FC can control the range his fleet is fighting at by having the fleet "anchor" on him. That is: keep at range, orbit or approach him. Being cloaked up somewheres 200km away and just issuing orders isnt gonna fly.

It used to be a thing - using Cov Ops frigates. I never flew under an FC who did so, though one of my FCs really could have done with doing so... I did hear about FCs who did, and I know of one FC who conducted fights from a cloaked Falcon.
At the time the Fleet system was actually the gang system which may have had an effect - and Nullsec fleets were 249km or go home (and quite often we did, the fast way) so perhaps range was less of an issue...

Yeah I had a FC that use to fly a covert ops ship(2008-09). It felt less then ideal at the time and even more so now. He never knew if the targets were in optimal range, the targets HP and often needed constant feedback from the fleet on what was happening on the field. Basically a lot of unnecessary chatter during ops.
