So this isn't strictly a new player type question, but this trial is currently my only active account, so I'm kinda limited as to where I can post this.

Something I've wanted to try for a while is the "Pos in a box" strategy for wormhole occupation that was mentioned in a "Living in wormhole space" guide I read a while back . Basically the idea goes that you have a small fleet of corpmates who are online at the same time every day. Each day, the fleet would move to a different wormhole system and do their thing; raiding sites, harvesting gas, mining and basically stripping the place bare before the occupants notice you're there. At least one hauler would have to be present, and would carry a small POS inside itself. Each day, the POS is set up and used as a base of operations, and the next day it is taken down and carried to the next system.

Is this actually a viable thing to do? Has anyone actually tried it? It sounds like the logistics of such a thing would be a nightmare.

it *can* be done ... but there's a lot of :effort: involved. On top of that, small POS towers are laughably weak, if a decent crew of BS (or tier3 BCs) finds your tower, it's gonna be trashed in no time flat...

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

The POSes main defence would be that it contains nothing much of value; it would basically just be to defend the "home base" Orca, and so that you don't need someone constantly sitting in it. Actually, can you use the fitting service of an un-manned Orca?

All you really need is the Orca I guess, but the Orca would be extremely vunerable outside of a POS shield. How much would a small POS set me back (roughly), including fuel, strontium e.t.c? I can see the tower itself is about 40M, but having never actually run one I have no idea what the "real" cost would be.

No, you can't use the fitting services of an un-manned orca. Though if you're bringing an orca along, you should have enough room for a SMA (which will let you re-fit ... hell, you could hide the orca in there too).

POS is ~40m
fuel blocks are about 15k per (20k for gallente... but meh). so a month's worth for a small tower will run you just shy of 110 million (144m for Gallente). Note that the blocks aren't going "live" until 24 January.
SMA is another few mil (10?)
Stront will run you another few million, but you only burn that when in RF mode. Looks like it'll be sub 5m for a full bay's worth
