THIS is what real men use as ammo for cannons, the rest is just crap compared to it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&feature=endscreen&v=46GBjlUOROY

I wonder what one of those would do to an aircraft carrier, when fired from a ship.

What you see in that footage is not from an artillary launched nuclear shell. In fact your watching the propaganda against it because the legality of doing it is so not legal.

America wish to change this.

Nice lot eh ?

The videos of that always make depressed when you compare it to EVE, supposedly some of the autocannons spit out shells like that every 1-2 seconds.

Yet they look completely unspectacular.

Likely because the minmatar have figured out how to channel that energy into a small point when the round impacts. Nuclear weapons are spectacular but highly inefficient in that most of the heat energy dissipates harmlessly in every direction from the initial blast. Aside form those at ground zero who will be melted instantly from the heat, the greatest devastation comes from the blast wave itself, and the human casualties, from the radiation. There is no air in space to produce a blast wave, and ships are shielded from radiation. As space is full of radiation, the output from a standard fight is likely in the range of a small percetage of san francisco spitting in the ocean anyway.

Not anywhere near to them.

OK it was in my mind that they were illegal, and they are not.
All explained here

They are however the tools of nuclear disarmament policy.

EXTRA EDIT

Two words - North Korea.... they should be illegal
Just an IMHO

Not much considering that the carrier's aircraft would sink any ship before it got within gun range. Never mind the escorts (including submarines) guarding the carrier.

The best bet for sinking a carrier is an ultrasonic missile or an ultrasneaky submarine. While spectacular the technology and the tactics used in that kind of warfare in that video are nearly six decades old.

Though the only nuclear powered subs with a chance are the astute class or the virginia class. There is not much out there to compare to those two for quite a few years to come.

the idea of nuclear artillery and other smaller tactical nukes (nuke mortars, nuke shoulder fire missiles, nuke mines) have been mulled over by the military for a long time. Many see it as the only way we'd ever stand to win a large land confrontation in Asia without scorched earth. (though how they can rationalize that level of widespread radiation as NOT scorched earth I'll never know)

I'm not sure about the legitimacy of the video, but USA, Soviets and at least France and Britain have developed the tech and trained units to use it. Though that was some time ago.

I doubt we'll ever see it used. Not only because it runs contrary to the goals you have in place when deploying a ground force but because using it just once is likely to escalate hostilities beyond a conventional military engagement into mutually assured destruction.

If you really want to see that, then why not see it all in 1080p?

The test is real and the footage of the firing and detonation is also real, the footage of the blast effects has been edited in for some reason. Upshot-Knothole Grable never included any testing of blast effects, just testing detonation and yields. This kind of tech could well have been dropped by the military because the type of wars they fight in now, they no longer need to wipe out whole mechanised battalions or similar targets.

Its difficult of course to know what the military are up to but if these kinds of weapons are still development they would have advanced quite beyond those early tests. Yields would be larger via a fusion warhead and the shell would be satellite and laser guided.

... and then gets killed by those who didn't realize that.
