Question About Criminal Flags and Downtime

Recently, I was docking at a major trade hub just prior to downtime. Specifically, I docked in my Interceptor with about 20 seconds left on the "Cluster is shutting down" timer.

As I was approaching the docking radius of the station, a random Thrasher locked me, but I docked almost immediately afterwards. Needless to say, my "Pucker Factor" meter pegged for just a moment.

This got me to thinking. If you were to criminally flag yourself in hisec, thus precipitating a CONCORD/Police response, but the cluster shut down before CONCORD/Police could destroy your ship, what would happen?

Assuming all of the processes on the cluster shut down at the same time, the aggressor should be able to wait out his criminal flag, log back in, and still have his ship, albeit retaining any armor/hull damage inflicted by the NPC response. Given CCP's position on avoiding CONCORD response in hisec, this should be considered and exploit.

Is this really the case? Or does the server boot all character connections but keep other processes running briefly to handle situations like this?

I figured that if anyone knew the answer to this, it'd be the C&P crowd. Any input would be appreciated.

Given that this could be viewed as an exploit, I would say do not discuss it on the forums. Instead, submit a petition regarding the issue an await a response.

The window of time is pretty small for all of the necessary components to be in place to even try to test this. It is an interesting question though.

The times it would actually be useful seem pretty few and far between. But I only gank for profit, if I was killing miners I guess it might be useful more often.

I had a friend who lost an Ishtar to rats because he was tackled in a site when the server went down, and while the clients were all kicked, apparently the server remained active long enough for them to eat through his ship. That was before the changes to aggression mechanics though, so no idea if that might still be the case.

That being said, forums are not the place to discuss exploits, and a petition should be sent. If you discovered a potential problem, you might even get a plex for your trouble!

I thought that petitioning an exploit required evidence instead of just a theory. I will try petitioning them anyways to see what happens. Thanks for the tip.

As for the venue of the discussion, given the non-confirmed nature of this issue and the fact that I'm looking for evidence, I felt it was appropriate to discuss publicly. If I had evidence in-hand that this could be exploited, I'd agree that it wouldn't be.

Pretty certain that rats remain active long enough during server downtime for the CONCORD rats to kill you.

But submit a petition, and test it on the trial server.

Edit: The reason the thrasher was planning to pop you then would be so that their 15 minute criminal timer would be during 15 minutes they weren't going to be undocking anyway. If I need an extended AFK, I do the same thing - shoot one last person, then go cook a pizza while the 15 min redcard is in place.

Player drones stop reacting, however I am not sure of NPCs since downtime is suppos to "refill" or "reset" certain things, such as astroid belts and such. I would think however you would still die, since really lets be honest. Concord pretty much "Doomdays" you.

You're probably right, and being that it has yet to be tested, it's not actually an exploit, but CCP still doesn't like people talking about exploits, which IMO is really a policy they should change. If people are aware of something being an exploit, they have NO excuse if they get caught trying to use it. If you stumble across a weird situation and it happens to win you a fight, then you get banned for using an exploit, well that's just stupid.

Either way, the petition is the best way to make CCP aware, in case they were not already aware, of that potential situation, and gives them to opportunity to correct it in the event that it actually would work. Though I suspect that Concord would remain active long enough to get you.

I have won a fight with something that I suspected (after the fact) may have been an exploit.

Petitioned it, and was told 'working as intended'.
