Honestly, I really dislike it. I don't really like that sort of anime-like cartoons, and her hair is exceedingly ugly.

Hmm... not the kind of criticism I was expecting for an artwork.

About the anime look, that's more from personal bias or taste rather than art criticism. I have practiced a lot with the eyes mainly to see which style best suits me. This style kind of stuck with me. I found it to be a relative balance between anime and realistic eyes. If you look at real anime eyes, they are exceedingly large in relation to the head and too far apart from each other leaving a huge gap between them. But of course some people like that style just like how many people like abstract art like that of Pablo Picasso or Romero Britto. Others like it more realistic like how Leonardo De Vinci does it and, if you want to include more modern artists, Artgerm from DeviantArt.

About your comment on the hair, that's at least the first part of the actual criticism I'm looking for. What is it about the hair that makes it ugly? Is it the choice of color? Is it the style in general like how some people don't like mullets? Is it the lighting or shading? Is it the proportion of the hair size to the head size? What is it exactly that makes it look "exceedingly ugly" as you pointed out?

I was also looking to see what else about drawing needs to be critiqued. How is the anatomy (muscles, hands, joints) of the characters for their respective poses? How is the lighting? How is the shading? How is the choice of colors looking? Does the Dramiel look alright? Does the background work with the foreground? Is the outline of the character alright?

Speaking of the outline, if you look at my previous artworks in my profile you'll notice a distinct difference between this artwork and the rest. The outline in the older works are thicker and a bit more rough or the amateur outline as I like to call it. This recent one utilizes a smoother, more consistent outline based on the live streams posted by Artgerm and I wanted to practice doing that because the amateur outline just made my characters look far more cartoony than necessary.

PS: If you think any part of this is ugly, than by all means don't look at the following link.Ugh

great start however i would look into the body shape of the characters, especially the one on the left, very big built more of a masculine body shape, anime chars should look "hot" and have good body and curves. the shading and detail is great you just need to work on the shape

Thanks. I'm still working on the overall shape for my next project. Hopefully I can get that sorted. The trick is knowing how the muscles look in different poses and that's what I'm trying to grasp. I'm also working to improve how I draw hairs since I am not all that happy about how this turned out now that I took a second look at it.

Bear in mind that I have never been to art school, not even an art workshop. No, that middle school elective I once took doesn't count. And it wasn't until a few years ago that I finally started the hobby. That said, I have a long way to go. I'm improving, but still nowhere near as good as some of the artists I have seen.

The body on the left could use a bit of work and the Dramiel seems a bit out of place but overall it's really good.
