Invention - interfaces should be used up during invention

Maybe this belongs in ideas section, but I would rather not have it drowned out by "APEX force" and ship discussions.


Currently interfaces are a permanent fixture in inventions. They do not get used up. You buy one, and you never need another interface. Anyone finding these blueprints through exploration, almost never builds one as there is simply no market for interfaces. Interface parts are left behind in exploration sites as they are worthless.

I would suggest that interfaces are used up in process of invention, like RAM parts in manufacturing. A welcome change would be,

  1. each interface = 1000 new interfaces of same name/type
  2. each invention attempt uses the same number of new interfaces as datacores


So an invention that uses 2 datacores, uses 2 interfaces or 0.2% of current interface. 500 invention attempts results in a new interface to be required. 16 datacores used? 16 interfaces used too.

This should not affect prices significantly, but it would create a market for interfaces and interface blueprints.

I wouldn't have a prob with that. Like a bpc it could have limited runs..............................

Another thing i have always found odd...........the ships we fly never use fuel?? Perhaps in the future we crossed the perpetual motion barrier??? -chuk

Capital ships use fuel. The normals ships don't because they have some nuclear reactor that does not use an appreciable amount of fuel. If you think about it, it makes sense. Consider if energy usage for propulsion scaled linearly with distance. Then if a jump drive uses 1000 isotopes for 1 light year (over 63,000 AU), then traveling 20 AU (typical warp in system) would use 0.3 isotopes. To use 1 isotope would require traveling at least 63 AU.

You can argue that subcaps can scoop enough atoms from space while traveling to refuel in flight making fuel usage irrelevant. That explanation works with other sci-fi ships too Smile

Mine are solar powered. You have to consider the potential pollution you would be spreading... in the, er... vacuum...


Anyway, OP, what purpose would consumable interfaces have?

The way I see it, I don't need to buy a new operating system every time I do something with my computer. I don't see your reasoning behind the proposal; logically, mechanically or lore wise.

They just removed percentages of damage to modules so why introduce a 0.2% damage to something, that is going backwards. I dont see the point of implementing this except just as another isk sink.

You may as well propose that ships have to go in for maintenance and repair just for being flown, like a 200 light year service or something.

No, I think it should just be left as is.

As I said, to create *some* market for actual interfaces. Currently these things are buy-one-lasts-forever kind of a deal where everything else is consumable. This change would line up interfaces with everything else so interfaces are consumables during invention.

If you want a game-wise-explanation, datacores are generic. Interfaces are attached to said datacores to make them race-specific entities where results are race-specific. Then the combination of interface/datacore is consumed during invention process.

When I first started doing invention years ago I thought it was kind-of odd that everything else was consumable apart from those. They should be a lot cheaper and consumable or just got rid of. Not sure what the point is of having this stuff just for the hell of it. "complexity" isn't just the number of items you have to tediously gather in one place is it.

+1 on doing something with these pointless interfaces. It might be the buff data sites need.

You are missing a few variables there. While I admit that the supply of interaces far outstrips the demand, there is an actual demand already.

The only possible reason for having interfaces become a consumable resource would be to increase their price, (dramatically I might add,) where by increasing exploration data site revenue - primariy highsec sites.

So yeah, I am not in favour of making T2 gear even more expensive just to line the pockets of exploration site runners.
