Does the Federation like to watch?

I'm new to this whole capsuleer-thing with the Gallente and I can't get a straight answer on something.

In the quarters they give me there's these nozzle-looking things in the walls and I can't really tell... I've gotten up really close with a chair so I can reach them... and, well, are those camera lenses in there? There's even one behind the viddy screen supposedly looking at me. There's also this strange sink in the floor and what looks like some kind of big scanning element in the ceiling. I can't help but think that I'm being scanned whenever I stand there.

Look, I'm Intaki, native-born. I'm new to this sector and I've always thought about the Federation being a bastion of freedom. Maybe it is, but I'm starting to think that there's a whole lot of surveillance going on. It's like, yeah, baby, do whatever you want but we're watching you.

Am I imagining? Am I being naive? I hope I don't get in trouble for bringing this up...

Anyway, thanks for listening.

That's just Federal decor. We like our glowy things, apparently.

Well, they're pretty weird. I'm going to just have to try to put it out of my mind, I guess.

Have you considered they might be more than mere cameras for surveillance? They could be anything from climate control sensors to holo projectors. Play around with the controls a bit nearby. I'm sure you'll find out what they're for.

This is why I prefer to stick with Amarrian functionality.

On closer inspection, those devices you describe are holographic projectors. Look at the device projecting the main display screen in your quarters and you'll see it's almost identical to the objects you describe.

Maybe you should take a closer look at the eyes in those golden statues outside your door before you make that statement.

I had thought that and it seems logical. My newest (stupid) theory, though, is that they're sanitizing or anti-radiation nozzles and that the big hole is actually a drain when the cover comes off. But, seriously, I think my corp mates are just messing with me because I'm new and acted all weird about it.

I'm having too much fun now, though, to actually look up the answer.

The answer doesn't matter, because the truth is that while your personal quarters might not have surveillance devices in them, almost anywhere you go in the cluster is probably covered somewhere by capsuleer ran surveillance anyway, so its really a moot point.

Living in the pupil of 1,000 eyes, are we? Most likely so. What is more disturbing? That there are cameras watching you or who exactly might be watching on the other end? Especially in Gallente space.

They might not be cameras, though. I'm sure they're responsible for my recent hair loss.

Hmm. I think I could handle cameras knowing it's all just going into a big database somewhere. In private quarters, though? If so, it's a bit much, even in Gallente-land and even with these loaner bodies that can get recycled faster than a-a -- well, some suitable metaphor that I won't bore you with from down on the farm.

I guess it's easier to accept things when everybody around you is accepting them. I just found the whole concept really interesting, like "Oh, look, the Federation has its faults, too." I don't want to play that up too much, of course -- it's just that having stars in my eyes (magnified by friends and family who encouraged me) is what got me out here in the first place, so it was somewhat of a (likely imaginary) eye-opener.

Thanks to the other posters, too. Sorry I couldn't respond to you all.

Tris. I'd like to thank you for bringing this up. I suppose the very fact that you haven't been censured yet is proof enough that we're not being too closely watched.

I took the liberty of chatting to one of my contacts in the Federation Navy. He explained that they're magnetometric sensors, although he's not quite sure what they're for.

However, on a recent jaunt into Caldari State space, I had the misfortune to come under fire from pirate scum and had to dock at a station for some repairs and retrofits. The surveillance they exercise there - especially against a liberty-loving Federation patriot such as myself - is sickening. Cameras and sensors everywhere, in plain sight. I hope it gives them a nice sense of security....to me it felt like I was in a zoo for those traitors to gawk at.

You're welcome, and I just want to say thanks for the info on magnetometric sensors. I'll take that as the final word unless I hear differently... though, at this point, I'd probably just put my hands over my ears and go "Nah-nah-nah".

So... to those who might be adding notes to my file: I do love my Federation! (and I'm not even kidding).

The cameras are there... for your own safety!
