Probe expiration timer needs a warning

Learned this the hard way.
In preparation for the new exportation stuff for Crucible I ran the Minnie Epic Mission to get my RSS core scanner probes.
I promptly lost 8 of them (aprrox. 80M isk) because of extremely short duration time during a difficult scan.
My fault for not paying attention I guess - but a audio warning would be nice.
Light me up :/

I can't seem to find it, what is the expiration time on these RSS probes?

Seems the regular ones are 4.000.000s, which I recall are 1 hr.

So I guess these with 1.000.000s have a timer of 15min?

In which case yes.. I think you should get a popup once your first launched probe is within 5 min of expiration.
Someone once said I was a muppet. If that's so, I'm quite sure the Swedish Chef is my brother.

RSS probes? (I only ever use sisters probes - deep, core and combat).

I do agree that a warning of some kind would be nice when probes are getting close to expiring.

However, I do have to ask, why are you using RSS probes if you're not paying attention to their timers? Besides, Sisters probes last a full hour and cost 1/30th as much and you only lose about 2% scanning strength (which can be replaced by a cheap implant and is rarely needed anyways). Why use RSS probes at all?

I agree, a 2 minute expiration warning alarm would be nice.

I carry 5x RSS probes and only use them if I can't get a 100% lock on the sig with Sisters probes. Rarely ever have to use them.

Basically I'll just replace the Sisters probes with RSS probes. I'll place RSS probes in the same location where the Sisters probes were, set to the same scan radius. Usually only takes 1 scan to get that final 100% lock.

Why are you using such expensive probes? A scanning bonused ship with sisters probes and average scanning skills, can scan out anything. Why pay ~10 mill per probe when you can pay a fraction of that price for no significant advantage?

I have been using RSS probes exclusively for a long time and have never lost any.
I can comfortably fully probe 95% of WH systems in the 16min duration.
Only if the number of sigs is over 35 odd will i need to recall them and relaunch.

bottom line: lrn2probe
if you cant lock a sig down with sisters probes, youre doing something terribly wrong.

for those asking why use RSS, the idea behind probing is to do it as quickly as possible.
the extra base point of strength does make a difference.
theyre also much easier to distinguish from hostile probes on dscan since basically no one else will have then ;)
that 16 min timer also keeps you keen and makes to probe faster cos you need to get it done.
basically, they separate the men from the boys when it comes to probing.

Ouch! 8 x dead RSS probes is not good news.

FWIW I never find myself needing to deploy 8 RSS probes. 4 at a time, sometimes with a deep space probe watching for ships, is more than adequate for me.

I always carry 10 or so of each of the three sisters probe types, and also RSS core probes. The RSS probes I use when I have a limited number of locations to scan ... such as when I am looking for a particular wormhole type and know it's scan signature size. For general scanning, such as working thru and cataloguing the contents of a system, the sisters probes are fine.

Regularly running the minmatar epic arc, via a number of alts, keeps me in an ample supply of RSS probes.

I guess I am almost a 'vet' by now. Hopefully not too bitter and managing to help more than I hinder. I build and sell many things, including large collections of bookmarks.

I understand your frustration regarding loosing some expensive stuff, but like you mentioned it was your mistake and you knew how to avoid it. To me, there should be consequences when one doesn't pay sufficient attention to the game. Furthermore, there is a lot of other stuff which imo deserves more attention in this game.
