Mercenary work?

Greetings fellow capsuleers!

Third time's the charm and EVE has finally sucked me in to keep. I'm still trying to decide what I'm going to be when I "grow up" in EVE, but I'm intrigued in Mercenary work, so getting paid for fighting other peoples' wars.

Does this really work in EVE? Are people really willing to pay money so others will fight for them?

If it does, can you recommend any established Merc Corporations I can go knocking on?

Thanks for the help in advance!

ps. Does my avatar look badass enough to be a merc? ;)

Yes, quite often an industrial corp will contract another corp to help in times of war. Of course honor, reputation, and respect are expensive in space...

Depends what exactly you want to do, what timezone you are in, what languages you are fluent in, and what you can fly.

Go check out the recruitment board.

Knowing the flavor of most major merc corps... you'll probably wind up being someones mean-looking love-toy trying to look tough around a merc squadron. They tend to go for "mugshots while you were drunk" and "monikers you thought up while on LSD".

Merc work sounds all baddass but its not.

Merc work is for no lifers who have nothing else to do.

When you have a contract you have to put the hours in. You cant just log on when you want to as people are paying for your time. So be prepared to gate camp. station camp and just sit online for hours doing very little.

Also you wont be flying into massive battles where you come out covered in glory. Eve is not like that and it takes about 6-12 months to understand that. Its why there is so much moaning on the main forums
I dont normally troll, but when i do i do it on General Discussion.

Try reading the C&P forum threads, lots of Mercs in there, I have been in a merc corp before and as someone else has said it can involve a bit of sitting about not doing much and as you are at the bottom of the pecking order (so to speak) you might not earn much.

We did a lot of POS bashing in High Sec and that can be a bit boring as well as station games which can be a little soul destroying when your targets won't come out to play. But it's well worth a go at it, even if it's to find out whether you want to do it or not.

Thanks for the answers guys. Very good point on the sitting around and camping, because others are indeed paying you to do exactly that.

Unfortunately my gaming time is quite restricted and irregular, so it sounds like I'd be better off doing something else.

Still, I'd like to try some PvP every now and then. I signed up for the Caldari Militia, so I guess now I'm free game to all Gallente and Minmatar Militia members and vice versa?

I'll have to read more about the security ratings and whatnot. Don't want to get locked out of my "home" systems this early in the game...

Again, thank you for the answers :)
