He's talking about hacking, account theft, that kind of thing. I'm fine with that being a criminal offence. Kind-of surprised it isn't already.

Yeah but he specifically mentions in-game scamming too

I guess it's hard to quantify the actual damage done, for example.

Say you have a rare ship in your hangar, someone hacks your EVE account, undocks and self destructs, how would you quantify the damage?

Saying you 'bought' that ship in a 'virtual world' with 1 Trillion ISK 'fake money' that 'in theory' is worth 25,000$?

Make space glamorous! Is EVE dying or not? Ask the EVE-O Death-o-meter!

If he played eve he would soon learn what real politics is all about not to mention what real scams are.

a game where you can lose everything that has took years upon years to accumulate to a scammer in a few seconds, he would probably be taking ccp to the European court of human rights for the mental distress inflicted upon him.

It already is a criminal offence in the UK. Unauthorised access to (or modification of) computer systems became an offence under the Computer Misuse Act 1990.

One has to assume they are talking about activities outside of the games designed content. If theft, destruction of property are encouraged and supported game play by design then it would not be a criminal activity. This is most certainly only intended for misdeeds conducted outside of the games EULA (IE Hacking, Account Theft, exploits) etc.

Well

After a quick check elsewhere, what he is after is Hackers and Gold Scammers / Sellers (Mainly because they use hacked accounts, stolen credit cards and break EULA)

That is all well and good as it should be Smile

BUT!

Being a British politician and the total lack of digital savvy in 99.99% of all the rest of the UK politicians Roll

The dogs dinner of a mess that his Anti-Hacking / Anti Scamming bill would become after it had wended its way through Parliament is only to be imagined, I shudder at the prospect Shocked

It would be as bad as the 'Dangerous Dog' act which instead of saying prosecute the owners of 'Dangerous Dogs' instead attempted to define that a 'Dangerous Dog' was a breed of dog that does not actually officially exist, then have them all impounded and put down!!!

You give them too much credit.

I call it a publicity stunt.

Any publicity is good publicity, even if it's dumb and disconnected with reality.

He might as well proposed a law that would force everyone to wear pink hats on Thursdays and it would produce the same effect.

It's ok, not going to hold it against the UK. Politicians around the world are pretty much idio...um...less than optimal, too.

But that's ok, because when they're at less than optimal we can hit them the hardest.

De'Veldrin's Corollary (to Malcanis' Law): Any idea that seeks to limit the ability of a large nullsec bloc to do something in the name of allowing more small groups into sov null will inevitably make it that much harder for small groups to enter sov null.

This is pretty much 100% how I saw it, thanks for putting it a way I couldnt :)

There are lots of MMO players who get scammed and are sour for it. Usually they don't have legislative power.

Anyways, I don't think in-game assets are considered assets at all by any government, but even if they are they would belong to the game company and not the individual.

That's ridiculous. The last thing ANYONE needs is MORE government regulations.

That guy needs to take a long walk off of a short pier. I think in-game scammers should be stopped and there should be harsh in-game punishments but real life? Are you serious?

Although you do realize why this is right? Because pretty soon we're all going to be living in the Matrix and rocking our own set of surrogates. (Bruce Willis movie)

Does that act cover accounts? I wonder whether it left a gaping hole because the politicians were focused on hacking into systems rather than hacking of accounts.

It covers anything that involves you accessing ~stuff~ on any computer system where you're not authorised to be accessing it.

The same story was on the Guardian's website and was horribly written. It was only when the author responded to comments that it became vaguely clear that she understood the crook in question meant "hacking" and not in-game actions.

Those already are.

What he's really talking about is putting real people in jail because of hurt feelings in a videogame.
