UK politician wants in-game theft considered a real crime

http://www.kitguru.net/gaming/matthew-wilson/uk-politician-wants-in-game-thieves-to-be-prosecuted/

Would EvE get a special exemption?

Is this something that appeals to anyone here?

And if so, really?!

Can't get that into EVE, as it's not real theft
and the game works around the freedom to do so.

They'd have to close it if they had to remove this.

True.

Its the "in-game scammers" part that caught my attention

Of course, its come from a WoW-Playing Tory, so of course its a stupid idea

That's easy enough to manage.

“Hello, this is the CCP GM team. We see here that you got another player in legal trouble over legitimate gameplay. You also claimed to own our data and assigned a real-life value to it. This means we now ban all of your accounts and payment methods for life for harassment and obvious intent to RMT.”

I can get behind prosecuting account hackers, but prosecuting people for in game scamming (as much as I hate the scamming) is just plain stupid.

He'd have a fit if he played Eve instead of WoW. Can you imagine the tear threads his unpaid lackeys would post for him?

The facebook thread is full of butthurt carebears, with the occasional Eve player stirring it up Twisted

He's been divorced twice, plays WoW and promised his electorate to wear an Iron Maiden tshirt into the Commons, then said he wasnt allowed to, so didn't.

He also likes cycling for charity.

I think EvE would be the death of him.

Is that an argument for or against him playing EVE?

He probably managed to get himself scammed even in WoW.

Taking the loss of a super-dragon-sword or whatever to a RL country Justice Minister probably breaks the world record of videogame tears.

Well, hijacking accounts that you paid for should be treated same way as hijacking cars for example. After all you paid for it and somebody accessed it without your knowledge/permission, what's the difference between WoW account and Eve account and bank account or email account? In all cases it's not a matter of "what's inside" but a matter of your paid exclusive access to particular resource is being violated by unauthorized 3rd party.

Games are big business now and a lot of money is floating around but somehow governments only notice it when they want to collect taxes but when it comes to enforcing law games are for children and you should pickup proper adult hobby and who cares about your Sword of Ten Thousand Truths you paid 10k euro for.

They'd have a real hard time getting around the fact that the EULA, expressly agreed to by every player, says that any and all in game assets are the sole property of CCP.

Also, jeez. I had no idea there was this much butthurt in the UK. Talk about your first world problems. If people are genuinely so bored that they can agitate about videogame money, they need a war or something to get their heads out of their asses.

Yeah, they are called the English Blink (only j/k)

But seriously, I am behind people being taken away or fined or whatever for account hackery, but its the idea that in-game scamming should be illegal was what made me laugh like a drain.

Also get this;

In WoW; its illegal for a Rogue (aka a THIEF class in D&D) to steal money or scam, but racially motivated murder (ie PvP vs the Horde/Alliance) is completely legal.

I expect he had someone ninja-loot an item, or possibly roll need for an alt on a purple.

The worrying thing is that his position in government is not just an MP, he is the Secretary of the all party group on Intellectual Property.

What I am reading...

We should form an EVE guild in Wow,
creating characters to specifically hunt down and kill people all day,
to make them feel misrable... but within legal gameplay.

I'm in, we need just a few more peeps. XD

What happened to the YOGZ? (Sorry that should be YOGS, yogz are a brand of yoghurts for children here)

Did they all trade in their mounts for Supers?
