Just a pet peeve of mine, which doesn't mean anybody else will agree with me:

New players are "rookies".

Old players are "veterans".

When I travel 20 jumps and notice that the item I thought I had in my cargohold (eg. L.O. for the cyno) is in fact still in the station hangar, then I'm a "noob". In fact there are countless different situations where I've been a noob.

I've been a noob far more times as a veteran than as a rookie.

You become a veteran when you run out of weak excuses for being a noob, and accept that sometimes you will do some really stupid things that defy any explanation Big smile

Every group and time has their terms for any number of things ... including people who are new to the activity.

For me ... it was FNG's which stemmed from the Vietnam era and stood for ******* New Guy.

Noob is generally used as a dergrogative term but is commonly used across any number of games. I'm not sure of the use of the term outside of gaming.

In EVE i usually use New Person or Rookie. Rookie is often said with derision too though.

The thing is ... one can be a vet in certain areas - and still screw up of course - while being completely ignorant in other areas. If you haven't done it before ... it's new to you and all your experience else where is irrelevant. There is a general level of gaming experience that helps in some things ... a certain attitude that can translate across fields but that depends on how close what you're doing is to what you've done before.

Flying a new ship - is a new experience and you need to expect something of a learning curve but having flown other ships will give you some basis to start with, the closer in size and function the more likely you are to benefit from your prior knowledge. Some ships are very different though, so much so that, except for basic ship handling, you're largely starting from scratch.

Moving from any other field into PVP ... is going to have it's period of noobishness. Just make sure to start in small, cheap ships ... no matter what you might be rated to fly.
