the Power of API

Just out of curiosity, I decided to look into what all is granted by a full API. I did a quick google search, found a link to the powerful tools used by corporations to do their background checks, and was appalled at what I saw.

My assets and in which station I'd placed them, my wallet, all my market transactions, where I go, what I do, even granting full access to every notification and mail I send and receive? A full API literally lets someone watch my every move!

It's creepy!

I've now joined the bandwagon of those who refuse to provide a full API. No one shall have that kind of access to my game play experience. I sent an e-mail to my corp providing them with a new API. I hope they understand. It was just way too creepy a thing to have out there....

*shudder*

when all your stuff gets stolen by a spy I won't have any sympathy!

that said I don't think I've ever given out a full API, and well I have no plan to in the near future. although considering I've been thinking of joining with a new corp I don't know how well I'll be able to hold out.

Well, consider that when joining a corp and being asked for your full API when getting no APIs in return from the corp CEO and current members, there's really no way my sending a full API helps prevent me from getting my stuff stolen. No corp provides their APIs- they simply ask for the API of the new recruit.

It's a make believe spaceship game.

Seeing the everything of your imaginary character is not creepy.

It's just another aspect of the game. Nothing more.

Personally, I don't engage in any kind of player interaction with anyone who doesn't submit a full API first.

Because its safe security to hand out all of your corp's APIs to every recruit that joins. Thats like going to the your job and saying its unfair they can have your social security number but your not allowed to have the social security number of everyone who works there.

There's some pretty amazing and awesome aspects of the full API as well if you think away from the whole meta/spy game. Keeping track of your own stuff and assets down to the fuel in your POS, I would say it's not really creepy unless you give it to the wrong people.

(and obviously the most important call... the one to calculate how much time you waste per day on average being online)

I won't ask you for an API to join my corp, Titania.

We do fun activities like forum roams and thread ganks. If you have a knack for annoying people using only your words, then you are what we here at IAAM want. No need for a blaster when a sharp wit will kill with more finesse.

The full API sounds more like "activity monitoring" rather than "background check".

I would only give the public information.

API checks do not prevent awoxing. API checks do not prevent corp theft. When line members would have access to costly assets a background check and active monitoring would be in order. When line members have limited access and your security is decentralized, full API requirements are too much of a privacy invasion, and will stunt your corporations growth. It really depends on what your corporation does and how open you want your door to be for new members.

LoL, someone was trying to sell tons of APIs in MD last week:

"Say I've collected a large number of API's through ways which aren't against Eve's rules, would it be against the rules to sell in bulk here to corporations/alliances seeking intel via the use of these API's?"

Not even my mom will get my full API.Twisted

You know you can set an expiration date on the API key, right? Or delete it at your own leisure. So basically what you're saying is "Oh no, someone knows what I did for a limited amount of time completely under my control"

I just undocked for the first time and someone challenged me to a duel. Wat do?

So your API gives out your in game data, which we all knew. You realise this isn't real life, right? Who cares if someone wants to look at what your characters has been doing. If you can't dig out a full API, enjoy being relegated to the ass end of corporations who don't care about awoxing and corp secruity, all so you can keep in game data privileged. lel.

You guys talk about it like you would be giving out your home address or something. Just looking at a corp forums gives out more personal information than your API.

Any corp who wants information to the level of my communications with others can get lost, it is a violation of privacy of the person you are communicating with.

Say a friend mentions thinking about leaving his corp that is in alliance with yours then your leader goes "Oh better share this with the corp X leader they have a flight risk" meanwhile it was just a shallow temporary thought and the only reason the information ever came to light of day was because of someone having access to a full api and taking things out of context,

That level of sharing is just wrong,
