Random freezes - large page file

Ever since the crucible update, I've been experiencing game-breaking freezes, sometimes for 3 minutes sometimes indefinitely. If I recover from the freeze and look at my windows page file I see 2 gigs used, even though eve was the only program running at the time.

Specs:

gpu: Nvidia 9800 gt
cpu: Intel core 2 quad
ram: 4 gigs
hard drive: 500 gigs free
OS: Windows XP

Possible quick-fix

setting graphics to lowest fixes problem for me, but then the graphics are very bad. Setting them up again after they've been set to lowest has worked so far, but I'm skeptical of how long this will last.

I had 2 freezes the last days, too (I'm not sure if the first one was already before the update). I never had fatal issues like that before with eve.

Reading that topic I remembered:
I recently activated my page file for an application that refused running without one (No page file for years now). I will disable the page file again to see if that's fixing the client freezes.

But of course that's not what it's meant to be, maybe there's a memory leakage or something.

A 2 gig page file, per client running on your machine, is normal for Eve. It's been that way for over a year.

Don't ask me why Eve needs such a gargantuan page file. But that's the way the game is designed.

(I know this because a year ago there was a major memory leak in the game, causing my page file to grow to 5 gig and beyond. By carefully monitoring what activities caused this ballooning, I eventually tracked it down to the in-game text editor. But my conclusion, after monitoring my page file size carefully for a month or so, is that Eve normally fills up a page file about 1.8 gig in size for each client running.)

I've been having this problem too, ever since the last patch. My client freezes up every time I play and I haven't been able to play for more than a few minutes before it crashes for the past couple days.

Wrote a petition, hope this gets fixed soon. And here is the petition in full:
Quote:
Lately for the past couple of days, every time I log onto EVE, I can only play for a few minutes before the client freezes up. Every time. Without fail. Here are the steps I've taken to address the issue:

1.) Cleared the cache. Yeah, I know this is supposed to be some kind of magic cure-all and every time I've made a petition to you regarding game problems this is always what you suggest. So spare me this suggestion cause it didn't work, I still freeze whenever I try to play EVE.

2.) Reduced all the settings to their absolute lowest, and turned off all the extra effects. Didn't work.

3.) Checked the forums to hopefully find some people who have encountered the same problem and maybe have some kind of work-around. Found others having the same problem, but so far no work-around.

4.) Write this petition.

I am hopeful to hear of a speedy resolution to this issue. Thank you CCP team and have a nice holiday.

Bet you 100 isk they suggest clearing the cache though What?

thanks for writing the petition. If it would help, I think I'll write one of my own.

the problem only persists with me when I encounter several objects that need to be rendered, it's been happening prominently on the lvl 4 mission "Worlds Collide" with the highest settings turned on. The first room contains many ships, some of which have been converted to the new V3 shaders iirc.

I was able to complete the first room of the mission with the lowest graphics settings, but freeze on the high settings - I think this might be an error in video memory or something similar.

I have this problem as well it is happening for me not just in missions but does happen more often in missions esp in rooms 2 and 3 of AE. I have my settings set to the lowest possible. My page file also seems to be rather large it was a lot smaller with Incarna so not sure what is going on there.

Lost a Dominix lately due to freezing up in a mission, just got Eve is not Responding for at least 3 min. Hard Rebooted computer, logged in and yay im in a pod.

Warped into mission, NPCs start spawning, window froze, cant even activate hardners or reps and die.

Having this problem too, seems to be getting worse(happening more frequently) too.

My question to others with this problem. Did Crucible have to be repaired or fail when you installed it? Mine did.

Also, when clearing cache for the first time after a few of these lock-ups I noticed that the icons for all my ships in hanger seemed to be updated to something newer looking. Second time I cleared cache(15 mins later because I locked up in a complex) I noticed that the icons for targeted ships also looked new and improved.

So, is the game trying to update new ship skins/icons as you see them? Or, should they have been updated but because of a broken patch, they didn't, and the game is getting confused and locking up every time I encounter a new skin?

Just throwing some random theories out there.

As is, I dont think I can play, I have been lucky so far and not lost anything, but dont want to take the chance anymore.

I may try a clean install, as I dont see anything in tomorrows patch notes that seems relevant to this problem.

After re-install

Game is way more stable....... I think.

Hope next patch doesn't screw things up.

Haven't had any freezes for a long time. I wouldn't expect the page file being the cause for this. Although you might be able to increase your performance quite a bit (also depending on the fragmentation of the hard drive) by setting a fixed size (define minimum and maximum to be the recommended size).

If you're having more than one physical drive (i.e. 2+ hard drives), split the page file so each disk takes 50%. if you're having 3 or more hard disks, keep your system drive "clean" (unless it's really really fast) and put the page file one the other drives.

No more freezes after deactivating the pagefile again. Although it's not solving the problem itself it might be a solution for those with 6GB+. It's faster anyways. ;)

Still have this problem after todays update but not sure what todays update was meant to fix as can't seem to find any details on it.

When it freezes do you also lose the connection and have to log on again? There is also a problem with packet loss causing the game socket to close which causes the game to freeze and then disconnect. You can see if this is happening by running pingplotter against the game server at 87.237.38.200

No I don't have to log in a game it just unfreezes after redrawing all the UI windows and I am able to carry on doing what I was previously doing.
