Strip Miners & mining upgrades

I.m a newbie on eve ans I'm planning to buy a retriever which use strip miners. I was wondering if mining upgrades were working with et (most of them are called mining laser upgrade)

Also, i dont know what to fit in rigs slots, med & low power slots to increase my mining yield.

That can be a mistake. Retrievers are gank magnet even in high sec. And you as a newbee will have to learn how to stay aligned and moving to survive.

I suggest you start with this:

Limited Adaptive Invulnerability Field I
Small F-S9 Regolith Shield Induction
Survey Scanner II

Strip Miner I

Medium Drone Mining Augmentor I
Medium Drone Mining Augmentor I
Medium Drone Mining Augmentor I

Mining Drone I x5
Hobgoblin I x 5

Almost the same yield, you will have to go to station to unload more often but not that critical (every 12-15 minutes depending on your skills) but much better tank, less money needed and you can learn how to stay alighned

Good luck with your mining career!

As erg says, go with the procurer and use those mid slots to tank the ship. You can never make any ship totally gank-proof, but to gank a fully tanked procurer before Concord arrives, the attacker(s) would have to waste more ISK than any sane person would consider worthwhile.

Of course, there are a lot of insane people in EVE ...

Also note that Retriever got very small cap size and sometimes without high enough skills you will lose all cap just by mining and such.

I also highly recommend procurer and then when you can upgrade to skiff.
