Possible fix to [Defender Missile] system

Fellow capsuleers,

I was sitting home having good old alarms all around and news reports on both sides shooting rockets. missiles and bombs on each other (I'm Israeli) when I've had an epiphany...

As it happens defender missile is not commonly used in Eve due to varried number of reasons... for me at least is this few which counts it out:
1. Only shoots down missiles..
2. requires high slot use of missile launcher > hence I'm not killing stuff only defending myself and my fleet.
3. Not so useful for me at least.

So watching the news, don't know if you are aware, we got a system called 'Iron Dome' which is basically shooting down rockets which aimed at us from the Hamas in Gaza.

Now please do note I ask you to avoid political discussion and focus on the idea and technology in question.

Further reading online it seems that Israel got full scale anti missiles\projectiles defensive measures from shortest range (on tanks) to longest range (Ballistic missiles).

Here is rundown of the systems from shortest to longest range:
1. Trophy
2. Iron Dome
3. David's Sling
4. Arrow

My proposal:
First of all a new module which will occupy med slot instead of high slot will be created using name like "Active Countermeasures Module".
This module will use charges like Cap Potions ones and here is the trick...

we got number of weapon systems:
1. Drones
2. Missiles
3. Lasers
4. Hybrid
5. Projectiles

As for drones you shoot them and done with it but rest of those systems will require a dedicated charge...

Let's say I'm going to fight some guristas and I know there damn Battleships can cruise missile me from 100km... I'll bring some anti-missile charges and MJD to 100km. While I'm sitting back the module will shoot down missiles 1 per cycle X the number of modules I got... so let's say 2 BS shoots 2 cruise at me and I have 1 module it will shoot down one of them.

Let's take another example... let's say I'll be facing some Gallente militia at FW, bit scouting ad I know they will use tonight some Atrons. I then prepare my fleet with anti Hybrid charges on the module and call it a day. Same method 1 volley interceptions per charge in the module...

Some advanced versions of this module may got 2 charges per cycle or faster cycle times.

To balance this module I thought on number of ideas...
1. Use lots of cap like armor\shield rep module so u "burst it" on need.
2. Maybe some tiercide by scale which means smaller ships using "small" modules will be able to intercept incoming fire from small ships like frigs and dessy while Large module will fit on Battleships and will intercept large size weapons.

This is just a thought probably could use some work.

Your idea has some merit, but I think it would need more then that. Defender and FaF missles are pointless in EVE as of right now. Good idea... just pointless.

It would require a major fix, more like being able to attach them like rigs... rather then modules.

How does denying someone from getting in range in order to hit is the same as intercepting his projectiles shot at you which already meant to hit you?

At any rate I tried with my idea to preserve the core concept of defender missiles.

I was disappointed to see that the idea wasn't "delete them", but I read the OP anyway.

Personally I am in favor of a activatable midslot module that projects some kind of "electronic chaff" system. Problematically missiles would then need a full rebalance as they already have issues with application.

But then, pretty much every weapon system except hybrids needs a full rebalance anyway, lol.

probably that what should be done but I can't bring myself to vote for removing game features.

Hmm, seems to be a blend of the chaff suggestion (not too bad) and some tweaked defender thing, not convinced though.

But that might also be due to the fact that i am also working on a defender suggestion, but I need to work more on some numbers and some more research before I can publicize it. If your thread survives that long, then I might do it here .. nothing worse then another "I fixed defenders for you" thread Blink

My suggestion from past conversations about the uselessness of Defenders was make them drone killers, they lock on nearest red drone and home in.

But I agree with the spirit of this post, find a use for the useless
