Ship HUDs

I was wondering if anyone ever discussed having proper ship HUDs instead of a blunt interface with windows left and right.
There could be graphical enhancements to the D-scan (rather than just text), grid scan, and an overall update of the ship command buttons. Something that would really make it feel like we are in a space ship.

Ideally the HUD would be different based on ship class and race.

does it add much to the functionality? no. It adds to the overall feeling and experience, ie immersion.

Just wondering.

I like this idea.

Agreed. As a miner, I have set up several bookmarks in order to crunch down a certain type of roids in a belt. Whenever I am in that certain belt, I am wondering why it is not possible to display the bookmarks on in the overview that are currently on grid?

Kindest regards,

Imagine the d-scan in a spherical (3D perspective) / radar like display with 4 quadrants, a grid showing 20-50-100 km away and blue/red/grey dots for scanned ships...

- imagine the standard control buttons (radar on/off, cargo on/off, ...) integrated as true buttons or switches

- imagine a "computer" like real-time log for key information about the ship status and situation displayed with computer like fonts

Well you get the point. Put a HUD with the ship's cockpit's structure (bitmap) on top of the existing UI, revamp the key tools of that UI and integrate them to the bitmaps itself, with real-time updates.

Overall it would make us feel more like we're in a spaceship, which is what matters to us. Right now it's windows with space animations.

While I agree that the HUD could use an upgrade, this kind of thing:

...wouldn't really work. The reason we don't have ship cockpits etc. is that we aren't in the cockpit. We're in a pod at the heart of the ship, surrounded by layers of armour and shielding. That's also why the camera rotates around the ship: it's mounted on an orbiting drone.

So for a HUD change, I'd like to see a sleeker and more streamlined version of the current setup. More indicators (jamming, scrambling etc.) would be good, but overall the current HUD displays the information in an appropriate, fairly easy-to-use manner.

Agreed. EVE would be a really nice looking game if CCP put some effort into the UI. The overview, multiple windows, fixed text size, drop down menu and poor lighting effects make this game a chore to play at times...

I agree it need an update. but I am not seeing how it will be done with the current setup. Not only would you have to change everything You would lose the ability to customize it as much as you can currently.

For example there is not one thing standard about my layout appart from my local still being in the bottom left. Hell If i could make the Overview stack from bottom to top I would do that too.

I was thinking about this, but if you look closely ALL ships have some sort of cockpit design. Some obvious ones being the caldaris, or gallente (myrmiddon comes to mind). I don't think being a POD pilot goes against the idea of a ship cockpit, if anything is complements it. You board your ship and are moved right into the cockpit, from then on your abilities to manage the ship are linked to your pod capabilities, but you can still see and enjoy of the view!

As for customization, they definitely can give a cockpit hub with some degree of customization on the location of key features. Having everything standardized could also make it more interesting for the newcomer vs vet debate: they would all be on the same foot in that department.
