Basicly turns on then off. I do see a little bar as if you were to type but that's it.

Sounds like it could be heat related. Check the air intakes/fans and make sure they are not clogged up with dust and other crap.

You mention it turns on and then off ... but you also see the flashing text cursor. So does it stay on but just not booting or does the machine physically turn off?

1) Do you get the BIOS flash screen and the POST sequence ?

2) Are there any beeps - if so count them, some will be long (maybe in tone or pause) others short (again tone or pause)

3) Make and Model of the laptop. (Essential)

4) Last thing you did before this occured including software installations.

People will get you some help then.

Quick dooozies for all laptop startup troubles.
Remove battery and run only on power. Cured ? Battery maybe dead.
Remove Memory - get more bleepage and POSTing than you did ? Mem prob
Remove Hard Disk - as above ^ ? Hard Disk prob (not necessarily dead though)

Good Luck.

Is it plugged into the wall or batteries? It could be a dead battery. Had that happen with mine last year, battery lasted me like 4 years though :)

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Don't laugh -- you'd probably be surprised to know just how effective power-cycling really is.

pull the battery out and power cycle it, maybe the battery is shorted.

On a semi-related question -- what are you seeing on boot? You don't see a POST, but is the Compaq logotype coming up? I ask because some computers have a 'splash screen' logo that's used in place of the standard POST display.

I can't get rid of my darn signature!  Oh, wait....

Make sure the battery is out before trying, with some laptops, a bad battery will prevent the thing from turning on even while plugged in.
