Part One: Ambition

Lord Masha Kavir was an atypical Amarrian holder's son. Though outwardly he portrayed aloof coldness, he harbored deep passions that bubbled below the surface of his exterior calm. Convictions and sentiments that would certainly earn him a cleansing should the priesthood ever decide to look too deeply into his affairs.

His Udorian ancestry was an unspoken black mark in the eyes of the Empire that left him no doubt of his fate, should his disposition be unmasked.

The recent exodus of the Khanid, and the adept utilization of his family's wealth, had brought his bloodlines into favor in the council and at court. But acceptance was only extended so far by the True Amarrians.

And so he had disappointed his father by taking a position within the Ministry of Assessment. Most men of his station and background would have applied to the Imperial Academy and graduated into the service of the Navy. But, that would certainly have put him under a degree of scrutiny he could ill afford.

He had risen quickly in the service of the Chancellor. His personal wealth and status with him. Calculated steps toward a goal that none but he knew, until at last he stood poised to take over as Head Minister.

Another title to add to those he had acquired in his near meteoric rise in corporate leverage. Many of them uncomplimentary, like 'The Stone' and 'Murky Masha'.

The Amarrian guardsmen who served as his bodyguard referred to him sardonically as the Vizier of the Frontier, after his habit of dealing with remote issues himself.

A habit that brought him this day, to this backwater world, in a bid to increase his prestige in the eyes of the Emperor. News had reached him of an archeological find on one of the outlying mining colonies. An ancient, apparently Amarrian research complex of some sort. Buried under kilometers of bedrock.

It's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then, and it's a poor sort of memory that only works backward.

Part Two: Arrogance

Masha Kavir walked slowly down the shuttles boarding ramp, his entourage in tow. He surveyed the black, volcanic landscape with narrowed eyes. The heat rolled up the ramp like a hungry beast, devouring the cool, damp air of the shuttles interior. It licked at the edges of the breathing apparatus they were forced to wear.

Shimmering in the distance, the mining colony consisted of several score of geodesic domes of varying sizes. Linked by enclosed gantries, it looked like some huge golden arachnid squirming in the heat of this barren plain.

He had received a message from the Holder, a minor member of House Sarum, as his Epiphany class Yacht slipped into orbit above the colony. A message informing him that a security issue at the site had precluded a formal welcome and extended his sincerest apologies for the slight. The Holder would meet them, as soon as he was able, at the central control dome to show Lord Kavir proper hospitality.

Masha snorted out loud at the thought. His guardsmen glanced at each other with stoic calm. The Holder was old guard, and his contempt for Udorians was ill concealed. Masha rehearsed a multitude of inapparent jibes to hurl at the arrogant fool. For he had a full dossier prepared on the Holder prior to embarking for the colony. He knew where to needle to the greatest effect.

And the fact was, Masha did have full authority to confiscate the find, which he was certain was another factor in the open hostility he detected in the Holder's message.

In the end, he would certainly come to a mutual agreement which was beneficial to both, but, before then, he would remind the man of who held more sway on Amarr. This God forsaken slice of hell and the unpleasant circumstances of his arrival demanded it.

It's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then, and it's a poor sort of memory that only works backward.
