retail box installation problem

So I just recently reformatted my computer and installed via my old retail box... it wont patch sadly. I am not quite sure if this is even the right thread but any help would be nice.

Maybe because the retail box is 10 years out of date. Even if it could patch, it would need 12 gigs of patches as it is.

Just download from the website.
