Hey everyone, I'm a fledgling pilot as of a few hours ago and I was just looking for some tips/advice seeing as this games learning curve (or learning cliff as I have come to realize) is quite daunting. My main fear is of ruining my character right off the bat.

Also, seeing how this section of the forum seems to be overrun with this question I almost feel obliged to ask. Anybody wanna spot me with a 60 day trial? Just get at me if ya do :)

Hoping for some feedback,
Zenith

Haha, I think you'll have to be more specific than that, but if you want general advice you'll probably get one or more of the following:

"Only fly what you can afford to lose."
"There is no completely safe place in EVE."
"Never trust anyone in EVE."
"Ship spinning is one of EVE's most important and most entertaining features. Make sure you spin your ship, because there's a counter that appears at the bottom of the Hangar. Can you make it over 9,000?"
"I wish I could have Exotic Dancers in my Captain's Quarters." - Not really advice, but...
"Laz0rs! PEW PEW PEW PEW PEW PEW. Go with laz0rs!" - I'm guilty of that one, admittedly.

Seriously, I think some good advice would be to not worry about "ruining" your character. I mean, it's your first character, so if you make mistakes and learn from them, you will benefit in the future. Don't be afraid to ask questions, even on things that you think you should know, and explore the game to find what you really like to do. Don't let others dictate how you should build your character (though you can listen to their suggestions, of course, and in some situations you may have to bend a bit to be accepted. That's mostly PvP/PvE group content, though).

Quintessentially, EVE means freedom. Not complete freedom, but more than other MMOs by far.

With ruining your char im guessing you mean training the "wrong" skills. There really is no right or wrong. Along the line you might be pissed at your self for "wasting" a week or two training to fly a hulk for mining, just to realize you hate to mine. But in Eve small things like that does not matter that much. Your interest changes and im sure most here have some skills they wish they could change but in the long run its such a small thing.

Think like this..when you look at your char and you have 50 mill sp,do you really care that you have two mill sp spread around in things you never use?

The main reason i hear for people to restart during their first month is because they joined the wrong corps and is worried about their employment history, and because they did not know how securety status worked and decided to try and blow up concord for fun.

The second one is rather easy to avoid,do NOT shoot at concord Blink To be on the safe side do not fire on anything but rats until you know what will damage your sec status, and what the negatives of a negative sec status is.

For the first one,i hate doing this again but... Here is a link to a guide on how to find a corp. Read over what people say and take your time before you decide on one. You dont have to join a corp right away but look around and see if you can atleast find some people who are willing to let you hang around in their public channel and answear your questions.

The only general advice i can give you is,be patient. If you can do that you will do fine here Smile

Welcome to Eve and good luck Big smile

As stated above, you cannot really "ruin" your char, you might however "waste" a bit of your time training for things you have little interest in (but then, interests might change).

Anyway, for a general guidline to the mechanics of learning things, you might want want to check out this link:

I think of EvE as a giant sandbox. You really cant go wrong with your character. Peruse activities you think look fun and give it a shot. If it turns out not to be your particular cup of tea, then start re-tooling your character for something else that sounds fun.

I do have to say from my perspective that the absolute most mind numbing activity in EvE is mining.
With that being, said go blow some ships up (id stick with NPC if you cant afford to loose your ship), the results can be quite entertaining.
O BTW, watch out for scams. If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. There are alot of folks out there that prey on noobs.

Also, having a sense of humor helps makes the game more fun! Big smile

Well while it does have sand in it, the box is more like a cat's litter box and thats not sand that they are kicking in your face.
