You can post whatever you damn well please as long as it fits the forum theme and respect the rules.

Taking your example of support for cancer, as long as it's in the OOPE forum, then why not? It's there for that. If you don't care, don't read.

Meh. Blocked him a while ago and feel better not having to read his posts. He can do likewise. Tool exists for this exact purpose.

One of the most obective critical thinkers I have ever had the pleadure of reading and you blocked him.

That says more about you than I needed to know.

You really are a worthless piece of trash LS.

If you don't want to be part of this community and support other players, then kindly sod off. You are entirely useless and your presence is not just unnecessary but toxic. A player came to us for support, and your egotistical response is to rail against him and then open a general hate thread when it turned out that no-one with even a single sane cell in their bodies agreed with your boneheaded stance. If that's the attitude you're going to have, then everyone is better off with you gone.

Where do you draw the line though?

For me, the only person's behaviour I draw a line on is my own.

This thread, as with many that people post, is about drawing a line through someone else's behaviour and judging it against what we believe is correct.

For me personally, that's too much. The only person I can control and the only person I should try to control is myself. Typically I apply a "don't be an ******** " test (I quite often fail my own test unfortunately), but I'm certainly not going to be upset by what someone else wants to express, nor the ideas they have.

If someone wants to express something personal, then clearly they feel that will be useful to them. Who am I to judge that?

Each to their own though.

Yes. OR I can not think about it, which is easier. Also a valid defense mechanism, by the way.

As someone who has been down that road, no, no it is not. It's emotional paperwork and it has a deadline. You can work on it now while you have plenty of time and energy or you can put it of till the last minute and try to deal with the full weight of it all at once. As the metaphor suggests, people often do not make the best decisions under such duress. Take that for what you will.

You make a valid point, good Sir or Madam.

Who do some people have the need to to post the most private details of their personal life on public forums?

I notice this a lot especially in north American culture - every little detail, first thing a lot of people do is post on all the forums about it. Never mind that a lot of people dont care, or dont want to know, or it might bring up unwanted memories.

What happened to notions of privacy and friends? If you got married, sick, cured, divorced, whatever, tell your friends about it by all means - but why tell strangers? And why do it on a computer game forum of all places?

I mean there are mailing lists, tools to manage friends, corp, alliance mails, regular emails, facebook - use those, its not that hard.

For example - the post here about someone having cancer surgery. Thats great, best of luck to that guy, but do I want to know about it? My grandma has cancer, my friend has cancer, and my best friends mom had breast cancer surgery recently - I do NOT want to be reminded about 3 people I know that might still die. And I do not go asking for support of random people on a computer game forum either - its my details, I do not go burdening others with them.

This is a forum for a computer game, not a board for cancer support. This is best done on facebook or some such.

It may sound harsh, but public means respecting other's right NOT to be informed of personal details of certain nature. Im not being hateful or anything, I just dont want to know about certain things. And there is a reason why certain topics are off limits in the EULA.

Please keep topics here in general direction of EVE.

It must be the same instinct that causes them to think eveyone on Facebook wants to know that they have irritable bowel syndrome or like to eat scrapple. I abandoned FB after I realized that almost everyone I knew was much more vapid and self-absored than I would have ever known if we only interacted in real life.

Providing snippets of one's personal life humanizes the game a little bit. I for one thoroughly enjoy hearing about what goes in people's lives, especially in other countries ('Merican here). It's the reason I stick around EVE (and grind for PLEX, to the chagrin of one responder from one of my earlier posts) rather than other games where I'm lumped in with other North Americans. This isn't necessarily bad, but far less interesting to me.

I've found a few people in game who come close to real friends, who I would reach out to for support on real life issues, who could be trusted to give a considered response or sage advice. None of them, however, in General Discussion.

Then why didn't you do the same with the thread you didn't like?

why would i block that thread? i simply told the OP to keep personal stuff to himself and thats that.

Because what he did is digital equivalent of standing on a busy intersection downtown and yelling to everyone and noone in particular about something, does not matter what.

And when you do that, others have a right to either support you, or tell you to take it someplace else. Which I did. Crass and heartless someone said - that's subjective. To me its normal to keep personal issues to myself, and I find contrary behavior crass and heartless. Who is to say which is right and which is wrong?

Somethings shouldn't be in GD, like stealth forum moderation threads. Get out.

EDIT: Just saw the thread that this is referring to. Originally I thought this was about a thread asking for donations or some such thing. Instead its a well known poster letting the community know that his surgery went well. While the thread probably should be in OOPE, I for one am glad that he is alright.

Because of what you said before. You don't like something, you block it. Leads me to believe you're only continuing in the vein with this topic to stir the pot.

Quote:

No, what he did was tell the community that he's alright after he mentioned his issues a few weeks ago and people remembered and gave him support because he is a known and some what famous part of the Eve Online community.

People cared. He updated us. We were happy.

Quote:
And when you do that, others have a right to either support you, or tell you to take it someplace else.

TBH I have never once seen someone tell another person to shut up with their talk of cancer and pain and suffering that they are going through. People tend to have more empathy than that.

Quote:

In this situation? No, not really. Pretty objective.

Quote:

If it's normal to you, why are you not keeping it to yourself wrong? Why are you pontificating about this being wrong? Don't say you aren't, this whole thread is you bitching about the other thread being inappropriate.

EDIT: Sorry but my immature side needs to add this...
