Possibly moving to Sydney - advice appreciated

There is a 50-50 chance that I'll be moving to Australia next summer, more specifically Sydney. Since I'm from Europe, I'm currently preparing what I need to move there, in case my plans materialize as expected.

Anyway, I've been looking at various suburbs in Sydney trying to decide where to look for an apartment to rent (for a start), but I don't have much experience with Sydney real estate market or neighborhoods.

I've found a decently populated real estate aggregator site (http://www.realestate.com.au/). However, I don't know if the info/prices there is relevant and up-to-date. From my previous experience with aggregator sites, agencies that post there either:
- intentionally lower to prices for properties;
- show great looking properties that are no longer available in order to attract the customers.

My questions for those who are from Sydney or have been living in Sydney is:
- Can the info on realestate.com.au be generally trusted and is there another good real estate site that could be useful?
- Any suggestions on suburbs that I should be looking at (or avoid)? I'm generally interested in "middle class" suburbs with low crime rates relatively near to CBD (up to 1 hour drive). Decent amount of restaurants and cultural venues is a plus.

Being a self employed programmer/web developer with my own software firm, I'd also move my business there. Most of my clients are from CBD (since I deal with software for businesses), so my offices would also probably be in CBD or surrounding area (depending on whether I could afford offices in CBD).

Thanks for any help or advice.Smile

Given the years long drought and a history of bush fires that tend to escalate, I don't think I'd need to add more fire Straight

Thats entire idea. You go 'awww look at that cute little thing sleeping in the tree above us' and after you blink everyone around you is dead, you're standing in a puddle of blood and a dropbear is trying to eat your face.

Who? Me for planning to move to Sydney or Joshua Foiritain for mentioning dropbears? Big smile

By the way I already know that Sydney is one of the most expensive cities (if not the most expensive city) in the World Smile. But I've survived a hyper inflation, I think I can manage an expensive city CoolSmile

10 of the 10 most poisonous animals, critters, insects and whatever live in australia. Sure yeah I, too, would like to go there once, but I would worry I would get killed only by not watching what's inside the shoes.

Venomous. Poison is when you ingest poisonous animals or plants as a food item, like the Fugu fish.

make sure to report to the warden of HMP Australia when you arrive, for processing.

may i ask what you're in for?

In a few moments you will have an experience that will seem completely real. It will be the result of your subconscious fears transformed to your conscious awareness.

Not quite. Venomous animals rely on injecting the venom into your bloodstream for offense and defense.

Heya mate got your message in game!

As a welshman who moved to sydney around 19months ago id be happy to provide advice!

I currently live in freshwater which is a suburb on the northern beaches and around 45mins out of the city.

As for your questions realestate.com.au is a trustworthy source of info regarding prices of properties as you can see rent is high depending on what area your aiming to live in.

I highly recommend the northern beaches as it will give you the best quality of life - easy access to the city (the ferry from manly takes around 20minutes and drops you right in the heart of the harbour) and easy access to the beautiful beaches of oz :)

As said, i feel the suburbs on the northern beaches will give you the best options for commuting and still being near the beaches without directly living in the city.

Places that are generally avoided are the western suburbs (sorry westies!) rent is cheaper but your away from the sea and the crime levels are higher and generally not as nice as elsewhere.

For rent you can expect to pay 450 aus dollars a week for a 1bed unit on the beaches but alas im unsure as to bigger properties sorry.

What visa have you got/are you getting?

Any other questions man id be happy to help out where i can "D

Beta.
