Hi all, I've recently resubscribed to play eve and having connection issues saying socket closed or socket dropped etc. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

There have been a lot of threads on this or similar issues. What is your ISP/router?

Thanks, Ive tried looking at these other posts and even contacted ccp myself. They suggest a vpn but I dont know how to do this hence the post. My ISP is EE and my router is EE bright box.

I have no idea what EE stands for, sorry.

Nevertheless, setting up a VPN isn't terribly difficult so if its what CCP suggests try it and see how it goes. I assume they provided you with instructions?

EE is a uk mobile and broadband company. Nope, nothing at all from them. and I wouldnt have the faintest idea where to begin. ive tried googling it all but getting nowhere so thought i would try here.

TBH I'm not a big fan of the VPN solution - rather prefer to diagnose the actual problem and try to get it fixed.

Somewhere between you and CCP, your connection is cutting out, probably intermittently, resulting in enough packet loss to terminate your session. Could be your connection, could be something on your ISP's internal network, could be a backbone issue. Try to find out where, and contact the appropriate organization(s) about the issue.

unfortunately I couldnt even begin to understand how to do this. Ive tried doing the traceroute thing and it would have been aswell written in french.

Could you do a traceroute to the forums and get a realistic view of most of the route to the game server? Does CCP provide a ping URL for testing network problems?

(OP these are also questions for you to ask CCP in reply to their message to you. Also ask them if they have additional instructions for setting up a VPN or if they expect for you to find a service for this)

Edit: ninjaed by OP)

Op resubscribed...so definately not a trial

Why is this here and not in the forum it should be (Issues & Workarounds)

As explained, socket closing means your connection with the server isn't stable enough to guarantee a stable connection and EVE thus does the easy solution of closing the connection to you.

I've had it in the past with my ISP and in the end it was something at their end (I replaced modem, router and all cables to eliminate it being an issue on my end).

I emailed them what was going on and to see if they could find something, they found that something was wrong on their end and fixed it.

Hi. I apologise for my ignorance due to being less than a novice at this kinda thing, but I've no idea what any of that means. Ive switched off the firewall on my router and software and still cant get ping or traceroute to do anything. I ran cmd on the windows promt thing and done tracert 83.237.38.200 and ping for the same ip and it keeps saying timed out.

Also, I put this on here because I thought I thought I could get advice here. If theres somewhere better for it to be then I would happily move it....... if I knew how ha ha :)

You can't move it, you could ask ISD/CCP to move it for you.

And as obvious.

NCQA = Questions for new players about EVE and gameplay.

Issues & Workaround = Questions / solutions regarding connection / hardware issues etc.

You would more likely get suitable answers in I&W regarding your issue.

I am having this same issue - frequent disconnects with the "socket closed" error.

This is a trial account so I can't post in the other forum.

OK, this worked for me. I can't promise it will work for you.

Every ISP I know does packetshaping. Packetshaping is looking at the network traffic you are sending, and assigning a priority to that traffic. Some traffic, like HTTP, gets really high priority (the vast majority of "normal people" traffic on a network is HTTP, so it makes the ISP look good if web pages load fast). Some traffic, like P2P programs (bittorrent), gets really low priority, as those things are real bandwidth hogs.

Some ISPs misidentify EVE traffic as low priority. EVE is pretty touchy about packet loss, so getting traffic stuck in a low priority causes issues.

Fixing this requires some tech knowhow, and the ability to keep calling your ISP until you talk to the right support people to get it fixed. I wish you luck.

7.2 CAN I AVOID PVP COMPLETELY? No; there are no systems or locations in New Eden where PvP may be completely avoided. --Eve New Player Guide

I get this once in awhile as well. All I do to fix the issue is power down my router and turn it back on after a minute or two. I have Comcast as my isp and had to do this every month 8 years ago when i first had their service. A few years of dsl I have never had to do it. Switch back and It stumped me to the point that I replaced my equipment....Only to later remember what I had to do.

Not sure if that helps anyone or not but it might be worth a try since its low cost and takes only a minute or two.
