I won't name all the other ships that desperately need a remodel to start making a minimum amount of sense. Just draw a straight line through the thrust axis to figure it out. Now imagine it's the main thrust vector. If it isn't in line with the area where the center of mass could be, your ship isn't going anywhere. At least, not any where you want it to go and definitely not how you would want it to get there...

Don't forget that warp engine creates a drag on space even when not in warp. The point I am making is that eve physics have little relevance to real life and for storyline purposes everthing exists for a reason. There's probably a very good reason why the minmatar built the ship that way, but we all know it's that's way because the dev's liked the look of it.

Dumbing down of Eve Online will result in it's destruction...

I wanna see something like that replace the blackbird, Rook, Falcon! none look like birds!

This would be more fitting for a caracal hull, TBH. It's also slightly too thin for a caldari design. It's a lot more like Mordu's ships, in fact.

For once, the bird/spaceship analogy might have some use if it finally gives spaceships the heat radiators that they all should have. The laws of thermodynamics are quite explicitly stated to apply in the EVE universe, but it appears that only the minmatar engineers know about them...

I'm thinking an appropriately scaled radome as seen on top of the Raptor from nBSG.

Visual reference here

Maybe keep the somewhat boxy shape, but make it a bit sleeker, with electronics pods at various points.

You don't just draw a straight line through the thrust axis, because what you''re assuming there is that the entire ship has uniform mass to volume. That's not the way a real spaceship works. There might be relatively hollow parts or super dense and massive machinery in certain locations while not in others. The engines only have to make sense according to the placement of mass.

I'm sure that wasn't too much of a consideration when designing the way the thing looks (or maybe it was) but the point is that the engine placement does not have to look visually balanced with the profile of the ship.

If you like any of the older ship models (original artwork) better than the redesign of your favorite hull and don't want them to be lost forever, support ship customization and this feature request.

Uh.. radiators don't work in space. Heat needs matter to travel through. Space is (almost) a vacuum.

Actually they do. But obviously not the same way as your garden variety radiator.

That's pretty much what I was talking about. Balance is what matters. i'm not talking about symmetry. Also, we shouldn't confuse the main thrust axis with each individual thruster's thrust axis. The main thrust axis takes into account the balancing of the different main thrusters, if there are more than one. In the case of three thrusters each placed in a triangle at an equal distance from one another, the main thrust axis goes through the center, not through any of them.

The thing is that volume is generally associated with mass, especially if said volume requires additional mass to contain. Bulkheads that contain negligible mass are a dead weight. That's why real spaceships carry gases in liquid or solid state, making propellant tanks very dense parts that still take up the majority of the volume of the ship, regardless of the propulsion system. So, if there is a big part of the hull that sticks out only on one side and apparently isn't balanced by anything on the other side, it would be safe to assume that it doesn't have a negligible mass.

It is totally possible to have a ship with an uneven thruster layout, though the mass layout and design needs to be balanced accordingly and vice-versa.

In the case of the slasher, it is pretty much impossible to have denser parts above the thrust axis to balance out the lower hull part because there is nothing above the thrust axis. Pretty much half of the volume is in line with the main thrust axis, and the other half is far below it. Either half of the hull weighs practically nothing (in which case, why have huge hulls that contain nothing?), or half of the mass is spread out in a tiny portion of the hull only slightly above the engines... It's rather unlikely. If the lower part of the hull was simply in front of the engine part, it would look more functional and believable, even if it would still be built like a plane and not like a spaceship.

Hey, don't mix your Minmatar in with my Caldari. Lol

(I get you were using it as a comparsion reference.)

+1 from my side.

Several caldari ships got a more or less bird-style appearance.

After doing the Moa and facelifting the Condor the Blackbird is a very good example for a real ugly, not bird-like model.

Whether the Rokh is a good or bad example, might be matter of taste furthermore.

Caldari BC's and BS's look sweet.
Caracal's a bit too thin for my tastes but really I only think the BB and Corax need a facelift.

BB should not look like it was made in an 8-bit game.
And the Corax should not look like a submarine. It's too ungainly, slow, and fat to look that sleek.

Well, fortunately the topic only take care of Blackbird. There's really an issue.

I don't like the outfit of Cormorant or Ferox. But it's ok, that they are in place. It's really a matter of taste. So far... BB is still an issue ;).

To be honest, this: http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2010/286/e/5/eo_contest__stahlvogel_by_ignusdei-d30lbhp.jpg is what the Barghest should of looked like

Yes, please.

I know some people are fond of the assymetry, but the current blackbird model is plain hideous. And now that the Moa is no longer the briefcase-carrying duck, this thing is a strong contender for the throne of ugliest model in EVE.

exactly what i was thinking when i saw that. Very sleek and fast looking design. Instead we have the flying frying pan.

The current barghest doesn't look bad mind you, its different. But, its the 2nd fastest BS in the game, and it just looks hilarious with this thing flying at the speed it can.

I just want to put all speed mods on it, have a mod that rotates ship to have flat part facing opposing ship, and plow into people with it. Maybe have 2, 1 on each side, and you could play pong or something.. with a merlin.

To OP, i'm all for updates on any older ship model. Blackbird has always looked alittle goofy to me.

With the new Mordu ships being very thin and sleek, that ship design for caldari would make a lot of sense and add a great deal of similarities between the two factions.

As it is, most Caldari ships are very beefy (in their blocky way) which is vastly different to Mordu ships.

Speaking of redesigning ships, the Minmartar need some love too! Especially their cruiser collection.

Once upon a time the Golem had a Raven hull and it looked good. Then it transformed into a plataduck. The end.
