FX: Shield effects added to the ship model

Hello,

Add a shield effect around the ship model to illustrate the effects applied to it and the impact it receives.

How:
Create a see through low polygon model that is 10-20% larger than the normal ship model. While the shield is active all impacts will hit the low polygon model. All shield based effects being applied to the low polygon model

Why:
Helps separate shield effects from armour. Makes EVE look more realistic as well as looking a bit nicer.

Would be nice with an effect like the ones in Star Trek...
Yet again... Then I'd like an actual penetration animation when my lasers penetrates a ship..

I was going to suggest a spherical bubble that surrounds the ship but then it would be too much like other sci-fi shield design. Wanted something more unique for EVE.

There was some concept graphics on this a few fanfests back.

Not only did it show weapons hitting shields, but going through them as the target bled into armour. And then even projectiles going through the ships hull as it entered low structure.

I have been unable to find it though.

I would love to see some damage animations, both shield and armor, released with one of the upcoming releases.

I agree, bubble shields would be horrible, so I like the polygon shape rationalized by saying that there are a bunch of "shield projectors" all around the surface of the ship and whichever polygon shape is chosen is the most efficient shape. I've always pictured the shields on my ships as basically hugging the contours of the ship closely and being slightly visible with a background ripple and colored ripples for different shield effects.

As for armor, seeing the pieces flying of the ships would be awesome! It would really suck for Minmatar ships though, they couldn't get to the nearest market hub before they fall apart all by themselves.

Along those lines, I think it would be really cool if missiles left a first stage shell behind when fired that you could follow, projectiles would leave a casing behind, and hybrid weapons would throw off sparks. All of them would only be visible for a couple server ticks. It would be like the space junk that floats around in some mission sites, only a graphical effect to look cool.
Although, I must say I have NO idea how much server load this would take up in large fights or crowded hubs, this is just a nifty idea.

All of it should be doable client side just like weapon effects. no extra lag, just strain on ur PC in big fights for which u can turn it all off.

i really like the idea of glowing hot shell casings being ejected after shots from artillery.

i have no idea if CCP are still working on the concepts in the pics. someone said something about it being ready by 2015, and there have been UI updates since fanfest 2012. But who knows.

This can all be done with DX 11 Tessellation which is why they are working on the DX 11 client slowly.
