I don't really see a problem with this. A really really long time for +5% damage? That would break the game? i don't think it would really. I doubt it'd put the veterans ahead of the new guys. Afterall... its 5% of whatever.

Problem here is it's not just 5% , unless you only introduce Lvl 6 for ship skills. It's level 6 in hull skills, gunnery skills, fitting skills, Ewar skills, etc. etc.

Can you imagine a Falcon with recon 6, all ECM skills at 6 ? Nasty damn ship right there. Or a hurricane perhaps?
Talk about power creepShocked

CCP would subsequently have to tone down the bonus stats on every ship/ mod to account for this.
Huge amount of work for very little reason, as you'd (probably) just end up with similar relative performance as already exists.

And once everyone (older chars anyway) hit lvl.6, then what?.........Lvl 7?

The idea is very simple:

Each skill will now be trainable to level 6.
To train a skill to level 6 a specific skillbook will need to be acquired. ie "Minmatar Cruiser Level 6"
Level 6 skillbooks are only available for purchase from NPC stations (ISK sink)
Level 6 skillbooks are expensive, approximately 10x the cost of the base skillbook.
Level 6 follows the exact same progression in SP as the other levels (each level is 5.65x the SP of the level below)
Therefore Level 6 is extremely time intensive to train (as you can see below):

SP (1x) multiplier:
* level 1 - 250
* level 2 - 1414
* level 3 - 8000
* level 4 - 45255
* level 5 - 256000
* level 6 - 1447936

Level 6 will:
Be a HUGE isk sink (something that is desperately needed currently)
Reward player dedication.
Give incentive to specialization.
Add excitement for veteran players.

Additional thoughts:
Want to spice up low sec? - make level 6 skillbooks only available at specific NPC stations in lowsec ("Minmatar cruiser 6" in lowsec minmatar space for example) Enterprising individuals can run LVL6 books to highsec for profit.

What do you think?

No.

This has been proposed before.

It's dumb.

As an old character let me assure you that there is plenty to train. I play Eve in terms of years, planning remaps well ahead of time. The time it takes just to keep on top of what skills require what other skills is a task in itself. A yearly remap is ample time to research.

Right now I have 4 years planned out. After that I'm not sure what I'm doing, but I won't be out of skills to train. There will also be more skills in 4 years, so I'm ok with a touch of uncertainty.

Personally, I like how Eve handles this. Instead of L6, you get a new book with a new bonus. The first 3-4 levels are easy to train, and L5 benefits older or specialized players. While L6 seems like a good idea, I would have the current system. The time to train L6 would be a lot more for a lot less. Many people already complain about L5 skills. Adding L6 will just aggravate things.
