Just because the market is player generated, doesn't make EVE any less free to play.
Nor does the existence of PLEX make EVE free to play — it is impossible to play EVE without a paid-for account, and this rather disqualifies it from the F2P status.

To the person making the transaction, it's no less F2P than any other F2P game on the market.

I'm not arguing your point, however.

Then that person's perspective is wrong.

@OP, if you can give me one serious MMORPG that uses F2P and didn't do it as an answer to a failing business I'll give you a dollar.

Not the OP, but Travian's had serious monetary gains since their Gold system went in place. And yes, it was clearly P2W as well - my roommate basically exposed that by proving a point.

won't go near it again for several reasons, unrelated to Gold. But it still had its strong points (such as learning about OpSec).

Hey the F2P accounts could be blocked from the forums - that could be a premium account benefit. That'd cut out a crud-tonne of rubbish posts, yo.

This was done in the original instance of the second life forum (only paid Premium members could view it). I'm sad to say it did not help any.

I dunno about you guys, but the way I see any P2P MMOs that went F2P means said MMOs is no longer profitable/milked enough cash from your pocket and ditch the gsme for a "new" project.

Eve have so much potential and CCP is showing it, so they get my money. Free expansions ftw too!

Never going to happen. Their income would drop and they'll be forced to start selling items and ships for money (like all the other free to play mmo's.)

buy PLEX for $$$, sell them in Jita, buy any ships and mods your heart desires.

Point of fact, if your proposal was ever made real, I will have one paid account and around 50 free alt accounts for research and trade purposes instead of 3-5 paid alts.

with maxed out slots on all 3 characters on 1 account you can earn more than you need for PLEX, but it does take time.

Free to play wouldn't change the landscape of the game at all. EVE is such a niche game that the people who don't like it won't stick around just because its free and the people who do like it will sub just based on the regular trial. All free to play would bring is even more ISK farmers and botters.

As soon as any sort of F2P comes into the equation of a games development then you can bet pay-2-win will be following right along with it.

If so then why do almost none of the major F2P games (and i'm talking major games like aoc, dcu and lotro, not these little fly by night studios that produce manga style mmo's with F2P) have P2W items?

if you say F2P != P2W, give me a solid reason why I should buy premium??

I am going to go out on a limb here and say the overwhelming majority of MMO players who would prefer a F2P model are teenagers. Respecfully, I do not want a large "de-evolution" of our player base as a majority. Eve players have always been savvy, intelligent individuals, and I would prefer to keep it that way.

If they don't want to pay to play the game, they can spend their money (that they have) on something else.

Elitist but it is so true.

I would quickly unsub all my accounts if Eve was suddenly flooded with F2P Players. Keep the maturity level up and you will always have a steady stream of growth, that is until there is viable sandbox game competitor.

MMOs come and go, but Eve remains.  -Garresh-

From what I've seen MMOs go F2P when they start dying, as in the case of EQ2, LOTOR and Conan.
