This guy is always good for some comic relief. Their submarine fleet doesn't sound very practical. Noisy diesel engines and torpedoes with 4-mile range. Versus silent modern subs with 21-mile range torpedoes. Seems about like trying to use a stealth bomber fit with autocannons and no cloak.

Gratuitous comments:
-Couldn't they have scraped the rust and repainted before Dear Leader visited? Is the North Korean navy lazy?
-I like the fourth photo down. It looks like the admirals are trying to take his order for breakfast.

Funny thing, Diesel subs can turn their engines off and go completely silent, while nuclear ones cannot. Don't underestimate older design subs, there is a reason most European navies went with diesel. They keep sneaking past the Americans in war games.

This is true, but the US is at a relative disadvantage in that its sub patrol areas are thousands of miles from port. D/E subs are much more practical and better for littoral operations, but they lack the operational endurance to patrol sea lanes half a world away.

Yeah diesel - electric is deadly combo, just recently visited U boat, also known as pig boat in Chicago one of first D-E engines if im not mistaken Im frankly amazed how classy it looks.

it isn't so much cylindrical it have curves and from bottom up it turns in a warship and freaking thing goes underwater, sped was halved or more under battery power but it was still coming to kill you...silently.

pic 2

in pic 2 you can see part they cut down so it can fit the room not a small piece 2 man tall or so.

You choke behind a smile a fake behind the fear

AIP (Air Independent Propulsion) is the next big thing for diesel electrics. Basically the boat has a bunch hydrogen fuel cells to increase underwater endurance and speed without the need to snorkel to run the noisy diesels for long periods of time. I know the Dutch are building such boats and I think the Russians have one under development.

This makes an already deadly platform even more scary and deadly.

Grrr.

And yet our glorious submersible fleet consists of only 4 (!!!) submarines.
Now that's what I call elite small gang pvp.
So NK has 5 times as many submarines as Germany- now the question remains if ours are really 5 times better than the Romeo class.
Oh, on a related note, some years ago one modern German sub sank an US carrier in a simulation. While this sounds impressive at first glance, please note that the US have 2,5 as many active aircraft carriers (10) than we have submarines.
Guess we should skip the next war, it's about time someone else creates emergent gameplay for the rest of the world...

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

All True. :)

To be fair, right now Germany simply does not need a lot of subs. And those things are helluvalot expensive. Not as much as a carrier ofc, but still.

Also, those subs are not limited to the 4 mile (or some such) engagement range mentioned earlier in this thread and they're even more undetectable than a D/E running on batteries.

And we're so god damn filthy rich that nobody even wants to be our enemy they want to be our friends so we can buy their sneakers, T-shirts and lead ladden teddy bears... Straight

Recently I watched a documentary about the "German Submarine Consortium"- seems like organized crime has set foot into the submarine business here and uses them as weapons of economical warfare.
They must have screwed Portugal out of hundreds of millions of $, entire regions there went bankrupt because of the deal, and the two submarines they got aren't even fit for service, yet devour millions in upkeep...
EVE is real, I tell ya...

Yup. How did you think we were earning the money to buy their sneakers? We're not mad enough to go all out pirate in small craft armed with pistols and bazooka leftovers from WWII.

It works pretty good, tons of mode for it as well to make it more difficult and realistic. Same with Silent Hunter 4, but I might be a bit biased with that one as I prefer driving the US fleet boats over U-boats.
